ScienceDaily (Mar. 28, 2012) ? A person's mere presence in a room can add 37 million bacteria to the air every hour -- material largely left behind by previous occupants and stirred up from the floor -- according to new research by Yale University engineers.

"We live in this microbial soup, and a big ingredient is our own microorganisms," said Jordan Peccia, associate professor of environmental engineering at Yale and the principal investigator of a study recently published online in the journal Indoor Air. "Mostly people are re-suspending what's been deposited before. The floor dust turns out to be the major source of the bacteria that we breathe."

Many previous studies have surveyed the variety of germs present in everyday spaces. But this is the first study that quantifies how much a lone human presence affects the level of indoor biological aerosols.

Peccia and his research team measured and analyzed biological particles in a single, ground-floor university classroom over a period of eight days -- four days when the room was periodically occupied, and four days when the room was continuously vacant. At all times the windows and doors were kept closed. The HVAC system was operated at normal levels. Researchers sorted the particles by size.

Overall, they found that "human occupancy was associated with substantially increased airborne concentrations" of bacteria and fungi of various sizes. Occupancy resulted in especially large spikes for larger-sized fungal particles and medium-sized bacterial particles. The size of bacteria- and fungi-bearing particles is important, because size affects the degree to which they are likely to be filtered from the air or linger and recirculate, the researchers note.

"Size is the master variable," Peccia said.

Researchers found that about 18 percent of all bacterial emissions in the room -- including both fresh and previously deposited bacteria -- came from humans, as opposed to plants and other sources. Of the 15 most abundant varieties of bacteria identified in the room studied, four are directly associated with humans, including the most abundant, Propionibacterineae, common on human skin.

Peccia said carpeted rooms appear to retain especially high amounts of microorganisms, but noted that this does not necessarily mean rugs and carpets should be removed. Extremely few of the microorganisms commonly found indoors -- less than 0.1 percent -- are infectious, he said.

Still, understanding the content and dynamics of indoor biological aerosols is helpful for devising new ways of improving air quality when necessary, he said.

"All those infectious diseases we get, we get indoors," he said, adding that Americans spend more than 90 percent of their time inside.

The researchers have begun a series of similar studies outside the United States.

The paper's lead author is J. Qian of Yale. Other contributors are D. Hospodsky and N. Yamamoto, both of Yale, and W.W. Nazaroff of the University of California-Berkeley.

The research was supported by the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation.

PALM BEACH, Fla. (AP) ? NFL coaches plan to go right at the league's most sensitive subject ? bounties ? when they get together with players next month.

Although a few shied away from commenting at owners meetings this week about the New Orleans Saints' extra payments, under which players were rewarded for big hits on specific opponents, most coaches said it's an important subject to address ? with the media and with their players.

"The whole league will talk about it," Giants coach Tom Coughlin said Wednesday.

"The commissioner wants the entire league to make sure it's discussed ? to go forward using it as an example, to stress there is no place for that in our league."

Last week, NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell suspended Saints coach Sean Payton for all of the 2012 season after the league investigated that team's bounties. Goodell also ordered every principal owner and head coach in the league to certify in writing that their team does not have any sort of pay-for-performance system.

Several coaches echoed Coughlin, hoping they only will need to bring it up once with their players. Clubs will gather for workouts in mid-April.

"It's definitely necessary to mention it," said Ron Rivera, whose Carolina Panthers play the Saints twice a year in the NFC South. "The precedent has been set by the commissioner and they need to understand that and it is not to be broached again. Going forward, we won't have to go over these things again."

Payton's former defensive coordinator, Gregg Williams, is barred indefinitely for overseeing the system. Williams was hired as defensive coordinator in St. Louis earlier this year.

Joe Vitt, Payton's assistant head coach, was suspended for six games, Saints general manager Mickey Loomis got eight games, and the team was fined $500,000. New Orleans also loses a second-round pick in each of the next two drafts.

Detroit Lions coach Jim Schwartz stressed how easy it is to cross the line from acceptable rewards to something sinister.

Schwartz said past awards he's given out while working for the Tennessee Titans and the Lions ? baseball bats or a boxing glove for big hits ? had league approval, because they didn't have any monetary significance.

"It was part of the game-ball program. It wasn't part of anything else," Schwartz said. "A recognition system has been in effect for football since pee wee ball. We give out game balls. We give out trophies at the end of the season for all different things. A lot of colleges give out stickers on helmets; high schools give out stickers on helmets. There's a big difference between things like that and things like bounties."

Schwartz noted that it's not unheard of for QBs to buy gifts for their linemen, or for running backs to do the same if they have a big season.

"That would all receive very good press," he said. "I think what this shows is how fine some of the lines are and how easy it is to go from something like that that's been around and has been part of football to something that should never be part of football and is not good for our game."

The NFL sent lead counsel Jeff Pash and security director Jeffrey Miller to New Orleans to speak with the Saints about the bounties one day before they hosted Detroit in a wild-card game in January. The league officials told owner Tom Benson to make sure no bounty system still was in place.

New Orleans had already beaten Detroit in the regular season, when Lions pass rusher Ndamukong Suh was serving a suspension for stomping an opponent.

Was Schwartz aware of anything untoward by the Saints, either time?

"Other than we got beat twice?" he said. "They were physical games but I don't recall them drawing any penalties. We were the only ones drawing penalties (in Week 13). I don't recall anything that the guys thought was extra."

Mike Smith's Falcons are the Saints' main rival in their division. Atlanta-New Orleans games usually are close, always are feisty.

"It is a physical game and there are rules we must play by," Smith said. "As coaches, it is important we make sure we coach to that."

One of the NFL's most physical teams ? and most fined ? is Pittsburgh. Star linebacker James Harrison was suspended one game in 2011 for a hit to a defenseless player, Browns quarterback Colt McCoy. Harrison was deemed a repeat offender, and he frequently has been fined by Goodell for illegal hits.

Pittsburgh coach Mike Tomlin said he's heard of other teams supposedly placing bounties on the Steelers.

"That talk has been around, but for us, it's not something that we've engaged in," Tomlin said. "We've always been somewhat amused by it. Not that it's amusing, of course."

Seattle coach Pete Carroll spent 15 years working in the NFL before going to Southern California for nine hugely successful seasons in college football. He returned to the pros in 2010.

He misses the aura that surrounded some players with a tough-guy image, but recognized that times change.

'HTC Wind' sighted - a dual-SIM One S lookalike for China

An as yet unannounced HTC phone for the Chinese market has found its way onto Taiwanese forum ePrice. The T328w is said to launch as the "HTC Wind", offering mid-range hardware and dual-SIM support. This is a feature which is particularly useful in developing countries, as users often move in and out of different networks' coverage areas.

Internally, you've got respectable list of specs -- a 1GHz single-core CPU, 512MB of RAM, a 4-inch Super LCD WVGA screen and a 5MP rear camera with LED flash. On the software side, the Wind delivers Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich and version "4a" of HTC Sense -- presumably some derivative of what's launching on the One X and One S in the weeks ahead.

Price-wise, you're looking at 1999 Chinese yuan, which is around $315, so you're getting a reasonable amount of smartphone for your money. It's unlikely we'll see this device launched in the U.S. or internationally, though the Wind's 900/2100MHz HSPA bands mean it'd work in Europe. In any case, the HTC Wind looks like a solid budget smartphone.

HONOLULU (AP) ? A submarine that will take "Titanic" director James Cameron to the Earth's deepest point has made a successful unmanned test dive.

Cameron tells National Geographic News that his specially designed submarine called Deepsea Challenger completed the nearly 7-mile test dive Wednesday. The team returned to calmer waters and was headed back to the site Saturday.

If all goes well, he'll spend about six hours exploring and filming the bottom of the Mariana Trench, about 200 miles southwest of the Pacific island of Guam.

Swiss engineer Jacques Piccard and U.S. Navy Capt. Don Walsh are the only other men to reach the spot. They spent about 20 minutes there during their 1960 dive but couldn't see much after their sub kicked up sand from the sea floor.

SEOUL, South Korea (AP) ? North Korea has moved a rocket to a northwestern site in preparation for a launch next month, South Korean officials said Sunday, as Pyongyang pushes ahead with a plan that Washington calls a cover for testing long-range missiles.

President Barack Obama and South Korean President Lee Myung-bak urged North Korea to immediately stop its launch plans, warning in Seoul that they would deal sternly with any provocation. Obama said the move would jeopardize a deal in which the U.S. would ship food aid to the North in exchange for a nuclear freeze.

"Bad behavior will not be rewarded," Obama said in a joint news conference with Lee. "There had been a pattern, I think, for decades in which North Korea thought if they had acted provocatively, then somehow they would be bribed into ceasing and desisting acting provocatively."

Earlier Sunday, Obama made a symbolic visit to the tense, heavily armed border dividing the Koreas, six decades after the Korean War ended with a cease-fire that leaves the peninsula technically at war.

North Korea's launch preparations are expected to dominate high-level sideline discussions at an international nuclear security summit in Seoul set for Monday and Tuesday that Obama and other world leaders are attending. The launch preparations come as North Koreans and new leader Kim Jong Un mark 100 days since the death of Kim's father, Kim Jong Il.

In northwestern North Korea, the main body of a long-range rocket was transported to a building in the village of Tongchang-ri in North Phyongan province, South Korean Defense Ministry and Joint Chiefs of Staff officials said Sunday, speaking on condition of anonymity in line with department rules. The officials provided no further details and cited the South Korean and U.S. militaries for the information.

The Tongchang-ri launch site is about 35 miles (50 kilometers) from the Chinese border city of Dandong, across the Yalu River from North Korea. Analysts describe it is a new, more sophisticated site that would allow the North to fire the rocket from the west coast to avoid sending it over other countries.

North Korea says it is planning to launch a satellite in a scientific endeavor. The launch is set for sometime around celebrations marking the 100th anniversary of the April 15 birth of North Korea's late President Kim Il Sung, who was Kim Jong Il's father and the current leader's grandfather.

However, Lee said the launch violates "a U.S.-North Korea deal and is a provocative act that poses a threat to international peace and security."

Under the agreement settled last month between Washington and Pyongyang, considered a breakthrough at the time, the United States would ship food aid to the impoverished North in exchange for a moratorium on missile and nuclear tests.

Washington says North Korea's rocket launches are meant to test delivery systems for long-range missiles it hopes to mount with nuclear weapons that could target Alaska and beyond.

"President Obama and I agreed to continue to strengthen the Korea-U.S. combined defense posture and sternly deal with any provocation and threat by North Korea," Lee said.

Japan is preparing to deploy land- and sea-based interceptor missiles and is planning to issue an order to troops to shoot down the rocket if it is deemed a threat or violates Japanese airspace.

North Koreans, meanwhile, paid their respects to Kim Jong Il, with tens of thousands gathering in Pyongyang's central square.

Kim Jong Un presided over a memorial service and gun salute in Pyongyang as North Koreans across the country observed a noon moment of silence in Kim Jong Il's memory. Citizens and soldiers lined up in rows, bowing their heads before a large portrait of Kim Jong Il flanked with wreaths of white flowers.

The U.N. Security Council condemned North Korea's last long-range rocket launch in 2009. Pyongyang responded by abandoning six-nation nuclear disarmament talks and, weeks later, carrying out a nuclear test, its second.

Also Sunday, the South Korean president and New Zealand Prime Minister John Key urged North Korea to cancel its planned launch, calling it a serious threat to regional peace, according to Lee's office.

The nuclear summit follows up on one held two years ago in Washington and is meant to find ways to keep nuclear weapons and material from getting in the hands of terrorists.

Detroit teeters on brink of bankruptcy as state takeover looms

A state-appointed commission looking at ways to help Detroit avoid bankruptcy must deliver its report by Monday. A state takeover is a real possibility.?

A state-appointed commission on Wednesday declared that the city is in the midst of a ?severe financial emergency," as city and state officials scramble to find a way to keep the city from bankruptcy.

Facing a budget deficit of $200 million, Detroit is burning up cash reserves for basic services. The 10-member financial commission, appointed by Gov. Rick Snyder (R), has until Monday to deliver an action plan, which could include a takeover by state government. Governor Snyder?will have 10 days to make a decision.

Although the city has long been under financial duress, the crisis escalated Tuesday after Moody?s Investors Service issued two separate downgrades of the city?s bond rating. Moody's noted that key parts of Detroit's rescue plan "are yet to be secured,? including?reliance on debt financing to stabilize city operations and ongoing labor-concession negotiations.

?Historically speaking, the situation has not been as serious? as right now, says Eric Scorsone, an economist at Michigan State University in East Lansing. ?Detroit has gone through a number of periods where it has had financial trouble and had to borrow money, but this is the most serious partially because revenue declines have been so significant.?

To avoid the takeover of a state-issued emergency financial manager, Detroit Mayor Dave Bing and the City Council are assembling their own plan that would cede some control, but not all, to the state government. The city has yet to deliver the plan to Snyder, who told the Detroit Free Press Wednesday that Mayor Bing ?should not expect to give us something and have us sign it. The key is ? we need to have a dialogue.?

The relationship between Detroit and Lansing, the state capital, has been contentious in recent weeks. The key difference between opposing proposals is control of city finances and who can hire or fire key personnel.

For example, Bing wants the state?s financial advisory board to make recommendations but the City Council to have final say. Snyder?s plan gives that power to the state-appointed board, plus it gives the state the power to approve budgets, appoint key city officials as well as restricting the city from entering collective-bargaining agreements with public-sector unions.

Mr. Scorsone compares the relationship to that of cash-strapped Greece and the European Union, which agreed to bail out the country in early March.

?That local politicians want to maintain control is common in any of these situations. You want to get the aid and not lose control,? Scorsone says. However, in the case of Detroit, which is facing a $5 billion burden in unfunded pension and health-care liabilities, it will be difficult for the city to prove it can handle key financial decisions ? a factor some say was confirmed by this week?s downgrade.

?Like Greece, Detroit doesn?t have much bargaining power at this point,? he says.

Bing?s proposal seeks $104 million in state aid for restructuring plus an additional $33 million to refinance the state debt by late April.

This week Snyder launched a website, Detroitcantwait.com, to make his case for his proposals and to solicit public opinion. ?Instead of worrying about who gets blame or credit, we all need to work together to put Detroit back on the path to success,? he said in an online video.

The process hit a roadblock Tuesday after an Ingham County Circuit Judge ruled the state-appointed commission violated the state?s open meeting laws by meeting behind closed doors. The judge ordered a March 29 hearing, but that is three days after the committee planned to sign its plan. ?

On Wednesday, the state filed an appeal to the ruling. In a statement released Tuesday, State Treasurer Andy Dillon said the ruling ?only services to delay a potential solution to Detroit?s financial crisis.?

Mass Email Marketing ? Three Things To Get Right | Eze, Inc. - The ...

Mass email marketing grew exponentially over recent years as more and more internet marketers became aware of the benefits of using it. That rapid growth looks likely to continue into the future.

Almost daily thousands of emails leave my computer and miraculously get delivered to people all over the world. And I am just one of many thousands of online marketers. The total number of business emails delivered daily must run into many millions.

How many of those mass email campaigns really succeed? Just consider those that get opened rather than being sent straight to the bin. Top web marketers keep telling less experienced people that they do work. That is fact but only if you get it right.

Doing it right encompasses many aspects of mass email campaigns but below are three things that are rarely considered.

1. Most of the mass emails I receive treat me as an idiot. Let me give you one example. A large proportion of those emails make very unbelievable promises such as making hundreds of thousands of dollars with virtually no work, no experience and no hard work from me.

To get this right the online marketers concerned must allow for the possibility that many recipients will be experienced in the world of business. They might own a small business or be employed by one and have an understanding of business activity. Web marketers must give respect to the person they want to sell to.

2. Respect also includes getting the recipient?s name right. Or, at least, address them in a polite manner. There?s nothing wrong in being friendly online; that is how internet communication has developed but don?t give the impression that making a quick sale is all you want to achieve.

Many of the emails I receive do not even contain my name. That is acceptable from a website I subscribe to for gathering information but when a marketer approaches me to make a sale then please treat me as somebody you want to have an online relationship with.

3. Get the spelling and grammar correct. Many online people are well educated so errors in the email text stand out as indications of the lack of attention the writer has given to their communication with them. If they cannot get their sales message properly written then how reliable are they at providing a good experience to a product purchaser?

Selling online has given a wrong impression in some respects. I learned my marketing skills in face to face meetings with customers before I started online marketing. If I had treated them in the way that so many internet marketers do today then I would not have achieved the success I have enjoyed.

When planning and implementing a mass email marketing campaign think of one of your customers being sat in front of you. Then write your email to that person in a way that you could show him right there. Get it right and mass emailing can make money online for you.

Messenger reveals secrets of fleet-footed Mercury

It's scarred and heavily sun-damaged, but then it has sat next to our star for rather a long time.

A year ago the aptly named Messenger probe reached Mercury and began orbiting the tiny, sun-baked planet. Now an analysis of over 100,000 images has given us a better picture of the closest planet to the sun.

Two papers published in Science focus on the northern hemisphere, looking at the topography of Mercury's surface and its internal structure.

Some of the most prominent features are the vast volcanic plains, as seen in this picture, with white indicating high areas and low altitudes shown in purple.

Parts of the floor of the Caloris impact basin, which is 1550 kilometres wide, have now risen above its rim, suggesting that there are high levels of geophysical activity beneath the surface.

The second team was investigating deeper under the surface using data from Messenger's radio tracking to look at Mercury's gravitational field. Their results suggest that the crust is thinnest at the poles and thickest at lower latitudes. The data also suggest that there is a layer of dense material underneath the crust, perhaps made of solid iron or iron sulphide.

At least one mystery about Mercury remains. In the 1990s, Earth-based radar telescopes detected a highly reflective substance at Mercury's poles.

It was suggested that this could be water ice. You read that right: ice, on the planet that orbits closest to the sun.

At the 43rd Lunar and Planetary Science Conference held this week in The Woodlands, Texas, a paper was presented showing that that the reflective substance only occurs in areas of permanent shadow supplied by deep craters. This is consistent with it being water ice, but it would need to be covered with a thin layer of insulation.

Messenger's mission has now been extended - so watch this space.

Indonesia police shoot dead 5 suspected militants in Bali

DENPASAR, Indonesia (Reuters) - Indonesian police shot dead five suspected militants planning attacks on the resort island of Bali, including one on a night club popular with foreign tourists, the national counter terrorism agency and police said on Monday.

The five men, who were shot dead in overnight raids on the island, were linked to the banned Jemaah Islamiah group, which carried out nightclub bombings on Bali in 2002 that killed 202 people, most of them Australian tourists, officials said.

The 2002 attacks were a watershed for Indonesia, which has the world's largest Muslim population, forcing the secular state to confront the presence of violent militants on its soil. Bali, which is majority Hindu, is a global tourist destination.

The five arrived on Bali on March 17 and surveyed La Vida Loca nightclub in the Seminyak beach resort, about 2.5 miles northwest of Kuta where the 2002 attack took place.

"Last night we have paralyzed five criminal perpetrators who were planning to commit terrorist acts ... All the suspects died during the raids because they defied or shot back with pistols at the police officers," national police spokesman Boy Rafli Amar told Reuters.

"The perpetrators have surveyed several places and among them are a gold shop in Jimbaran, a money changer and cafe La Vida Loca," he said.

It was not clear how advanced the preparations for attacks were. Authorities declined to give more details of the threat or say when the attacks were scheduled.

National police spokesman Saud Usman Nasution said some members of the group were still at large.

"They have made drawings of these locations as their targets," he told a news conference.

Three people were killed in the beach resort area of Sanur and two in the island's capital, Denpasar, and police said they recovered two rifles, two ammunition magazines, 48 bullets and a balaclava.

In Sanur, witnesses saw pools of blood outside a security guard post and police forensic officers at work behind a police line.

Police earlier said the suspects planned armed robberies to raise funds and they linked the five to a group that had conducted bank robberies in the city of Medan on Sumatra island.

"This is an Islamic militant group, a splinter group of Jemaah Islamiah who established a training camp in Aceh," said Nasution, referring to a province on the far north of Sumatra.

Australian media quoted another senior police officer as saying it was possible the group had been planning to carry out attacks on Thursday, the eve of Nyepi, or the annual Day of Silence marking Bali's Hindu New Year.

Balinese hold parades on the eve of Nyepi, which draw large numbers of tourists, the Australian Associated Press said.

The killings follow the beginning of a trial last month of an Islamist militant accused of making the bombs used in the 2002 Bali nightclubs attack.

Umar Patek, who was captured in the same Pakistan town where U.S. forces killed Osama bin Laden, is also accused of mixing chemicals for 13 bombs that detonated in five churches in Jakarta on Christmas Eve, 2000, killing about 15 people.

Security officials say he belonged to Jemaah Islamiah.
