Sitting at the bar sipping a microbrew is often an occasion to ask your friend or bartender about the beer or brewery. Is it local? Is it imported? What's the alcohol content? And can I have another? But if the barkeep is busy and your friends are clueless, you can text the beer's name to this number?and get a comprehensive profile fired right back.

BeerText.Us is a simple service put together by a pair of students?just last weekend, for a hackathon in Syracuse. It uses the?Twilio service to handle the texting and gets all its information from BreweryDB, which lets apps access its database for just this kind of purpose.

How does it work? You text 315-679-4711 with the name of the beer, and within a minute or two you should receive a fairly detailed description, including (if the database has it available) data on where and how it's brewed, the type of hops, and so on. That's it ? no sign-up process, no charge, just beer stats.

Be careful, though: some beers have rather excessive descriptions, and while your average microbrew might send you two or three messages to get you all the info, some will send far more. One commenter received forty after requesting information on a beer called Jack D'Or.

Things were a little shaky yesterday when the service made a slightly larger?debut than the developers expected, but now it seems to be performing well, and has some new features: Numbered texts, and a delay between them to ensure they arrive in the correct order.

Heavy periods of rain on and off all day (much needed) and at 5.29 we had a strong earth tremour! 5.1 on Richter scale apparently ? epicentre was 4 miles east of Stoney Ground, Anguilla, enough to get me to my feet on the second rumble. Our apartment building shook and a number of people felt it serious enough to go outside. Our coffee table was dancing on the floor! ? All quiet now, let?s hope it stays that way! ?

Good morning everyone We awoke this morning to heavy rain. It lasted about an hour and gave us close to two inches of rain. Our yard is soggy and out pool is filled to the brim. The sun is shining now. Will there be more rain though? Our Met Office gives this synopsis: ? Synopsis: The surface Atlantic high continues to generate through today an occasional brisk wind across the area. Moreover, a weakening trend is foreseen for the latter part of the weekend and onto the beginning of next week. Furthermore, seas could still get fairly rough over the exposed waters today and boaters should continue to exercise caution over these zones. Cloudy spells with shower activity otherwise persists during the course of this morning and expected to diminish in the afternoon. ? So of course my husband is out sailing around the island today in the annual Captain Oliver?s Regatta. Be careful out there, sailors! ?

Locally these showers could be heavy and accompanied by thunder resulting in some minor street flooding. Otherwise, seas are expected to be moderate to locally choppy over exposed areas.? ? We had quite some problems with flooding last night as a result, and this morning schools are closed while the government tries to clean up the roads. The sun is shining now but we are forecast to have more rain coming. CROWNWEATHER forecast this morning said: ? Heavy Rain With Flash Flooding Will Continue Across The Northeastern & Eastern Caribbean: An upper level trough of low pressure currently located over the western Atlantic will combine with copious amounts of deep tropical moisture and continue to produce slow moving very heavy showers and thunderstorms from today through at least Sunday from Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands through much of the Leeward and northern Windward Islands. The heaviest showers and thunderstorms are expected to occur during the afternoon hours of today, Saturday and Sunday. Flash flooding of streams, creeks and rivers are likely. The heavy rain threat is currently forecast to decrease across Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands by later Monday, however, a renewed threat for heavy rainfall is forecast from Anguilla and Antigua southward to Martinique and Saint Lucia by later Monday and Tuesday and then potentially again by next Friday as areas of low pressure develop over the eastern Caribbean and track northeastward ? ?

The glory days for the United States as a superpower policing and rebuilding the world are long gone, and it is time to face up new challenges and make some choices. The bad news according to the Thomas I. Friedman, seasoned columnist for The New York Times, is that by 2020 the numbers of Baby Boomers over 65 will double and care for the "old old" (85 years and older) will increase drastically as more than 15 million may be afflicted with Alzheimer's disease by 2050.

Who is going to pay the cost of all the care that will be needed? Statistics taken recently are startling. Friedman reports on one poll in which 56 percent of workers interviewed have less than $25,000 for the total value of their household savings and investments for retirement. That could pay for one hospital stay and a brief recuperation in a nursing home. Currently, family caregivers provide 80 percent of elder care, but this comes at a cost, too, in lost work hours, high stress, and declines in health.

So far, the President and Congress have refused to deal with this financial dilemma which affects the quality of life for millions of Americans who have worked hard and paid their taxes but still face imminent disaster. Friedman points out that, unless there is a real economic growth spurt, the choice is clear: nursing Afghanistan or supporting nursing homes for the Baby Boom generation.

Religious communities of all traditions identify respect for and care of elders as an essential spiritual duty. The question for Americans is whether they will demand that their government and other institutions take the necessary actions and make the choices to fulfill this responsibility.

• GVRL can create special collections from the admin site or by contacting tech support. For example, they can create a collection of DK titles that libraries can then display/link to on their websites.
• GVRL has an Access My Library app - still glitchy - use with caution. GPS authentication only, barcode authentication is not available through the Access My Library app.

?Review of December Meeting Minutes

• Page 2: NextReads. Group recommended that Joe get a quote from EBSCO that would separate out NextReads from the other subscriptions so we can tell how much we're actually paying for it. All three counties still use it to some extent so, the intent is to continue to subscribe unless the cost is prohibitive.
• LibraryThing has been officially dropped.
• Lisa McKenney's and Emily Zumbrun's names were misspelled.
• Minutes from the December meeting were approved.

Review of SAILOR Subscriptions

• SAILOR databases have not changed, the contract with EBSCO for MasterFILEexpires June 2013
• Committee would like to know when discussions will start regarding the renewal of the SAILOR contract

Review of WMRL Subscriptions

• eVanced scheduling software is now available and is being utilized by ACLS and WCFL. RELIB may work with ACLS to determine whether or not it is the right product for their needs.
• Mango Languages: Joe hasn't received an invoice yet but the intention is to renew
• OverDrive Advantage funds goes to buying more copies of titles already owned plus buying unique titles that are not already in the OverDrive database. Lisa McKenney and Carrie Plymire (WMRL) are responsible for purchasing Advantage titles for the region.
• MPERL has been unofficially dissolved and therefore we are now responsible for negotiating contracts for four databases: Gale package of Biography in Context/Literature Resource Center, Testing and Education Resource Center, ValueLine, and BrainFuse.
  
• Committee recommended that Joe get quotes from EBSCO for comparable products: Biography Reference Center and Literary Reference Center
• Compliance Suite expires in September. Julie Z, Jennifer Spriggs (ACLS), and Franny Lockely (WCFL) all use this software for librarian certification tracking. Intent is to renew.
• Dropped OCLC for Garrett County due to shared ILS

?FY2012 Database Usage Stats

• This is a little like combining apples and oranges because each database defines usage differently (i.e. page views, searches, downloads, etc.)
• If you want to see raw database usage data, Joe will email the committee his extremely detailed spreadsheet following today's meeting.
• Committee recommended that Joe see if he can separate out usage stats for NoveList Plus and NoveList Select Classic (this is what shows up automatically when you do a title search in the PAC). Committee would also like to look at pricing for each of these as separate entities.
• Committee would like to recommend that we strongly encourage our respective children's departments to promote Little Pim (language learning database for kiddos)

Reference USA Discussion
This was originally discussed as part of the FY2012 Database Usage Stats but since it is a recurring discussion I decided to give it a separate heading.
TRIALS Follow-Up

• Access News: not interested
• Zinio: not interested until it's iPad compatible
• Universal Class: not interested, do not consider for 2 years
• Dzanc Books: not interested, but Joe appreciates that this independent publishers is expressing interest in working with libraries.
• Proquest Historical Newspapers: not interested, do not consider for 2 years
• Pronunciator: not interested, do not consider for 2 years
• Muzzy: not interested
• Axis360: not interested
• 3M ebooks: not interested until more information is available from BCPL (they're BETA testers)
• Hoopla: there is interest around this; look at it after the Fall 2012 release

Committee is not looking to add anything new at this time be we'll consider any left over money to be used to enhance OverDrive or to purchase a new product later if we identify one.

Committee would like to consider using any leftover funds to promote the databases. This will be an agenda item at the next Spring meeting.

Newly formed MLC: Maryland Library Consortium. Joe might have to provide more information on this. The group's target is databases but Memorandum of Understanding to participate does not express a limitation on only databases. WMRL is participating.

GVRL Weeding

• WCFL is purchasing their own GVRL ebook titles and they're happy to share with the rest of the group even though WMRL is not paying for region-wide access
• Committee would like Joe to get quote from Gale regarding a special DK package and we want to know what the age of the titles is, then we'll decide if we want to trial. It was recommended that we talk with Harford County - they already have something comparable in place.
• Joe will make his recommendations to the group as to which titles he thinks should be withdrawn.?
• In the van on the way home, Joe and Elizabeth decided that Elizabeth would take on this task instead.
• We still want to receive the MARC records of the titles that are relevant.Lisa also said that ACLS can obtain MARC records for database subscriptions via OCLC.

?Discovery Services

• Joe asks that the committee keep these services/products in mind when we're at conferences, etc. They aren't a top priority but he foresees possible interest in them in the future. A one point-for-search could increase usage of the online subscriptions.
