Romney off-message in storm-ravaged Bayou

One day after he was named official flag-bearer of the Republican revolution, Mitt Romney confronted the limits of his small government rhetoric Friday in the storm-ravaged Louisiana Bayou.

As Hurricane Isaac petered out and headed off northwards, Romney jetted in from his nomination convention in Florida to visit the desperate residents of Lafitte, a small flood-damaged community just inland from New Orleans.

There, with the world's media looking on, he met 22-year-old mother-of-two Ashley Vegas, whose home was destroyed by a 12-foot (four-meter) wall of water, and whose bare feet contrasted oddly with Romney's suede loafers.

His advice for the suddenly homeless family? Seek a bailout from the US federal government's disaster agency FEMA by calling its 211 emergency hotline.

Vegas was thankful for the lifeline, open to many in Louisiana since Romney's opponent President Barack Obama declared a federal emergency there earlier this week, freeing up government rescue funds for beleaguered communities.

"I think he's a very good man," Vegas volunteered. "He's here to help everybody and do what he can."

Asked by reporters whether she was a Republican or a Democrat, the young woman giggled and said: "My mom would know."

The FEMA gambit might be the best option for flooded families in Lafitte, but the idea clashed with the message of Romney's campaign so far, which has focused on celebrating private enterprise and decrying government hand-outs.

When the surprise detour to the Bayou was announced, Democrats were quick to pounce. Senate majority leader Harry Reid said Romney's trip was the "height of hypocrisy" since Republicans plan to gut the disaster budget.

Romney was also accused of exploiting the disaster to steal a march on Obama, who is not due in Louisiana until Monday, when the huge security detail that travels with an incumbent would not disrupt relief operations.

His campaign dismissed such talk, insisting it was Romney's duty to see what could be done, to support local people and to receive a briefing from Louisiana state governor Bobby Jindal, a leading Republican.

Romney attended a 45-minute meeting with local officials, and toured a scattered community of simple homes nestling between oak trees draped in curtains of Spanish moss.

In normal times the Lafitte community, home to around 1,500 people, is made up of six square miles of land and two of water, and the floods swept through the homes of poorer residents who could not afford to raise them on stilts.

The visit itself was not plain sailing despite the assistance of National Guard reservists equipped with Blackhawk helicopters.

Two vans in Romney's motorcade were involved in a minor collision when a press van rear-ended a staff van, leaving the press pool which travels with the motorcade separated from Romney, who headed back to his plane in New Orleans.

No one was injured, according to reporters in the pool. The group abandoned one of the damaged vehicles and tried to catch up with the campaign.

So, on his first day of the general election campaign, did Romney convince?

Michelle Chauncey, a 43-year-owner of a shrimp stall, an entrepreneur who spent "tens of thousands" of dollars of her own money to elevate her home on stilts and thus avoid the worse of the flooding, would seem to be in his target audience.

She is a registered Democrat, but not entirely sold on Obama, fearing that his health reform plan will force citizens to pay private insurance firms, and she took the chance of the visit to talk to the Republican challenger.

"There's a lot of good things that I think Obama has accomplished in his term," she conceded. "As for Romney I haven't heard anything or know anything about him that impresses me."

"So if I had to choose today as I stepped into a polling place to vote, I'd have to cast a vote for Obama," she shrugged, pulling an unimpressed face.

Aaliyah Posthumous Album Cover Art Revealed on Twitter

Since the announcement that a posthumous Aaliyah album was in the works, the project has been mired in controversy. Recently, the late songbird?s label, Blackground Records, went on Twitter and posted the cover art of the album, which has everyone in a tizzy.

The artwork features what appears to be Aaliyah floating in the ocean with her face superimposed in the symbol of the letter ?A.? It?s a haunting cover to say the least considering that Aaliyah died in an airplane crash near the shores of the Bahamas. But maybe we are reading too much into the artwork.

Barry Hankerson, Aaliyah?s uncle and CEO of Blackground Records, posted the cover art and a confirmation that the album is forthcoming. ?Aaliyah 16 unreleased tracks 2013 stay tuned ? Enough said ? #TeamAaliyah,? he tweeted.

As you may already know, Drake, who is an obsessive Aaliyah fan, and Grammy-winning producer Noah ?40? Shebib are overseeing the project, which is due out in 2013. Hopefully, the album will arrive in stores on or around Jan. 16, which would have been Aaliyah?s 34th birthday.

The downside to the album is that Aaliyah?s closest friends Timbaland and Missy Elliott are not participating in the project. ?Although Missy and Timbaland always strive to keep the memory of their close friend alive, we have not been contacted about the project nor are there any plans at this time to participate,? said their manager Mono Scott-Young. ?We?ve seen the reports surfacing that they have been confirmed to participate but that is not the case.?

Meanwhile, it looks as if Mr. Hankerson is catching some criticism for the cover art on his timeline. He wrote, ?Twitter provides a block feature and I shall utilize it. Peace and positivity is the key to life.? He then added, ?Be #Positive the music is coming.?

What do you think of the cover art for the posthumous Aaliyah album? Tell us in the comments below.

'MAKE MY DAY'

The crowd roared at its first glimpse of actor/director Clint Eastwood, the night's surprise guest. "Save some for Mitt," he told them.

In free-wheeling, joke-filled remarks, Eastwood remembered the enthusiasm around President Barack Obama's nomination four years ago.

"Everybody's crying. Oprah was crying. I was even crying," he joked.

Then he quickly pivoted to the serious: "I haven't cried that hard since I found out there's 23 million unemployed people in this country. That is something to cry for. That is a disgrace, a national disgrace."

"This administration hasn't done enough to cure that," Eastwood said, and it's "time for somebody else to come along and solve the problem."

Eastwood got an adoring standing ovation by telling the delegates, "When somebody does not do the job, we've got to let him go."

At their insistence, he ended with his Dirty Harry catchphrase, joined by the crowd: "Go ahead, make my day."

SECRET'S OUT: CLINT EASTWOOD

Surprise: Clint Eastwood is the night's mystery speaker.

In a showbiz flourish, the GOP convention appearance of the "Dirty Harry" star and Oscar-winning director of "Unforgiven" and "Million Dollar Baby" was kept secret.

The suspense had built through the week as rumors circulated that Eastwood might make a Mitt Romney's day.

___

THE CHANT: 'U-S-A!'

Political conventions are one thing. But the Olympics ? well, that's something that can really get a crowd's blood stirring.

As a lineup of former Olympic medalists took to the stage at the Republican National Convention, the crowd of delegates burst into a spontaneous, fist-pumping chant of "USA! USA!"

Was it Tampa ... or was it London again?

___

ON THE ISSUES

Mitt Romney's focus on jobs and the deficit in his acceptance speech plays to his strengths on the issues, while Thursday's convention agenda seeks to shore up his weak points. The latest Associated Press-GfK poll finds him most competitive with Obama on fiscal matters. Among registered voters, he leads the president by 10 points as more trusted to handle the federal budget deficit, and holds narrow 4-point edges on creating jobs and handling the economy.

But Romney trails Obama by 15 points on handling social issues, and by 6 points on handling Medicare, a central focus of Republican vice presidential nominee Paul Ryan's congressional career.

The focus among Thursday night's convention speakers on Romney's personal and professional life could help to boost his personal image. Registered voters split evenly in their impressions of the former governor ? 46 percent have a favorable impression, 46 percent an unfavorable one. That lags behind Obama's 52 percent favorable to 46 percent unfavorable mark on this question.

Romney also trails the president on the question of which candidate is the stronger leader (50 percent Obama to 41 percent Romney) and is seen as less apt to understand average people's problems (51 percent say Obama better understands compared with 36 percent Romney).

WHOSE CONVENTION?

Whose convention is this?

If you use Newt and Callista Gingrich's remarks as a guide, you'd think the convention in Tampa was for Ronald Reagan. The former House speaker and his wife invoked Reagan 13 times during their brief remarks.

Mentions of Mitt Romney? Four.

___

A SOMBER HUSH

The floor of a national political convention can be a chaotic place. Many delegates do listen to every speech as the evening goes on. But other delegates mill around, chatting with friends, thronging the aisles, dashing out for food ? and above all else, angling for photos with well-known faces. It's often noisy and frequently raucous.

But every once in a while the convention floor stills for a bit. That happened Thursday night when Ted and Pat Oparowski, a Mormon couple, took the stage to describe a painful period in their life ? when their teenage son, David, was diagnosed in 1979 with non-Hodgkins lymphoma.

Ted Oparowski, who described himself as someone of modest means, told the crowd how Mitt Romney had struck up a friendship with their son, through his work in the church, visiting the 14-year-old during the months he struggled with cancer before dying.

As the couple spoke in slow, sometimes halting voices, delegates in the aisles turned and listened. Voices dropped. The stillness lasted until the couple left the stage.

FAMILY LEGACY

The family Bush is making sure its message gets out.

Among the few mentions of the last Republican elected - and re-elected president - were by his family, who seemed to use the brief time spent on President Obama's predecessor to try to polish George W. Bush's legacy.

A five-minute video aired at the convention Wednesday included side-by-side interviews with George W. Bush and his father, former President George H. W. Bush.

The senior Bush noted of his son's administration: "I think the thing I take pride in is the integrity."

The younger Bush's wife Laura added: "I'm so proud of George."

Romney advisers dismissed that speakers were advised to stay away from the Bush years. But some delegates said it was understandable that he didn't show.

Bush's brother Jeb, Florida's former governor, gave the most direct defense at the outset of his speech to the convention Thursday. It was completely off the advance script, and it was emphatic, praising "a man of integrity, courage and honor" who kept the country safe "during incredibly challenging times."

When he finished, he transitioned to his prepared remarks this way: "Now that I've gotten that off my chest, let's talk a little bit about our kids and education."

? Thomas Beaumont ? Twitter http://twitter.com/

___

GINGRICH X 2

Newt Gingrich, known for doing things his way, capped his losing presidential bid with a unique GOP convention appearance alongside his wife, Callista.

Taking turns speaking, sort of like Oscar presenters, the pair praised Mitt Romney by comparing him to President Ronald Reagan.

Barack Obama is no Reagan, they made clear. He's more like Jimmy Carter, the Gingriches asserted.

"It's striking how President Carter and President Obama both took our nation down a path that in four years weakened America's confidence in itself and our hope for a better future," Newt said.

Left behind were any hard feelings from the heated primary campaign in which he called Romney a liar at one point and in a debate urged him to drop "the pious baloney."

___

HISPANIC OUTREACH

Republicans continued their strong outreach to Hispanic voters during Thursday night's convention.

All week they have been highlighting Hispanic elected officials from around the country, but on Thursday the effort kicked into even a higher gear. In a short video, elected officials from New Mexico Gov. Susana Martinez to U.S. Rep. Ileana Ros-Lehtinen of Florida talked about how their party's values are the values of many Hispanics ? from strong family ties to strong support for small business.

On the heels of the video, Romney's son Craig Romney spoke in Spanish to the crowd, followed by former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush ? a popular politician who also spoke to the crowd in Spanish.

Scheduled to be up later in the evening: Sen. Marco Rubio of Florida ? perhaps the country's most up-and-coming Hispanic official.

? Sally Buzbee

___

BROTHERLY LOVE

Jeb Bush used his turn on the Republican's national stage to make a spirited, personal defense of his brother, George W. Bush, whose oft-criticized presidency has been barely mentioned at the party's convention.

"My brother, well, I love my brother. He is a man of integrity and courage and honor," Bush said before launching into his formal remarks, which focused on education policy.

Early in his brother's two-term tenure, America was shocked by the Sept. 11 terror attacks. Jeb Bush said: "During incredibly challenging times, he kept us safe."

Delegates responded with a standing ovation.

___

THE WONDER YEAR?

While speaker after speaker at the Republican National Convention lambasted Barack Obama ? and more than one mocked the final night of his 2008 convention in Denver ? they appropriated one of the best-known songs of that Democratic night's musical star, Stevie Wonder.

The Obama campaign played the song, "Signed, Sealed, Delivered I'm Yours," frequently at the end of the candidate's rallies that year, and Wonder himself sang it on the final night of Obama's convention at Denver's Invesco Field.

Thursday night, playing Newt and Callista Gingrich offstage, the GOP convention's band swung into the song, the second time it was featured in the hall this week.

? Robert Furlow ? Twitter http://twitter.com/furl442

___

FULL-THROATED DEFENSE

The last Republican president, George W. Bush, has been almost invisible at this convention ? until Thursday night. Almost no previous speaker had mentioned the president who immediately preceded Barack Obama. Vice presidential nominee Paul Ryan even took an oblique swipe at Bush, noting in his speech Wednesday night that the country's budget and debt problems had been caused not just by Obama, but by administrations before his.

That changed Thursday night, when the former president's brother, former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush made an impromptu ? and full throated ? defense of his brother at the start of his speech to the delegates. Jeb Bush's speech was on education. But before he leapt in, Jeb Bush got the crowd roaring by telling the crowd of delegates "I love my brother." In a very troubled time for America, Jeb Bush said, "He kept us safe."

George W. Bush was just a few months into his presidency when terrorists flew airplanes into the World Trade Center in New York City and the Pentagon, killing thousands of Americans. In the aftermath of those Sept. 11 attacks, then-President Bush ordered American troops first into Afghanistan to attack al-Qaida and then later into Iraq to overthrow dictator Saddam Hussein.

QUICKQUOTE: JEB ON GEORGE

"Mr. President, it is time to stop blaming your predecessor for your failed economic policies. You were dealt a tough hand but your policies have not worked." ? Former Fla. Gov. Jeb Bush, after praising his brother, former President George W. Bush.

___

REAGAN REDUX

Ronald Reagan is at the Republican National Convention once again ? if merely in spirit.

As the final session began Thursday night, a nostalgic Reagan video backed by music and sentimental imagery summoned the way the conservatives have framed his legacy. "As we continue our journey we think of those who traveled before us," Reagan's voice said over clips of war veterans and families. In a montage of images that ranged from space shuttles to Sandra Day O'Connor, his narrative was repackaged and re-offered to conservatives 23 years after he left office and eight years after he died. "Mr. Gorbachev, tear down this wall," Reagan said once again Thursday night.

There's no more potent image for the Republicans to summon, of course. This is a man who is the most towering icon of modern conservatism. When Reagan is brought out, it's always about imagery and implied GOP renewal ? about a "springtime of hope" and the notion of America as the shining city on the hill.

Then the music swelled and faded, the video ended and two fresh speakers walked on stage: Newt Gingrich and his wife Callista.

QUICKQUOTE: RENEWAL

WHAT'S OBAMA DOING?

White House spokesman Jay Carney says Obama is "fully aware" of the happenings at the Republican convention in Tampa this week. But he says he doesn't think the president watched Paul Ryan's speech Wednesday night, nor does he know whether Obama will watch Romney address the GOP convention Thursday.

Carney didn't say whether he thought Ryan's speech was factually accurate. But he criticized Romney's campaign more broadly for distorting Obama's record and policy positions in speeches and advertisements.

"Perhaps when the facts aren't on your side, you ignore the facts," Carney says.

HIGH-SPEED RAIL

Tampa Mayor Bob Buckhorn is all smiles, happy that so far his city has avoided widespread confrontations and arrests that have marred other conventions.

But that doesn't mean he's pleased with everything.

Buckhorn, a Democrat, used his daily press briefing to argue Tampa needs more mass transit options to build from the "worldwide" exposure it got during the convention.

In early 2011, Florida Gov. Rick Scott turned down a federal grant to help build a high-speed rail line between Tampa and Orlando. The Republican governor argued the state would wind up spending more than anticipated because it would cost more than initially projected.

Buckhorn took a swipe at Scott by noting that Detroit's mayor had thanked him recently because high-speed rail money once destined for Florida was redirected to other states and cities.

___

POLICE-PROTESTER LOVE?

As the Republican National Convention wears on, protesters are getting worn out.

The busloads of protesters ? who are staying at a makeshift camp dubbed "Romneyville" ? have seen their food and water supplies dwindle. Law enforcement has noticed, as well.

So on Thursday morning, police brought boxed lunches of sandwiches, fruits and ice-cold water to Romneyville. Chief Jane Castor said police had extra food, so they decided to donate it rather than throw it out.

Castor, during a morning news conference, said simply: "We're here to serve the public."

___

WHO'S TUNING IN

Sure, political conventions aim to fire up the die-hard partisans in the arena, but they're also made-for-TV events designed to appeal to undecided voters. Recent polling suggests they may not be hitting their mark.

A Pew Research Center survey before the Republican convention began found just over four in 10 adults were interested in following each party's convention.

Partisans were most interested in their own gathering ? 70 percent of Republicans were interested in this week's events and 66 percent of Democrats were interested in their party's upcoming convention. Fewer partisans check in on the other team: 41 percent of Democrats were interested in the goings-on in Tampa, Fla., while 28 percent of Republicans were interested in tuning in for Obama's re-nomination.

Among independents, just 37 percent said they were interested in the Republican convention, 36 percent in the Democratic one.

For Republicans angling for young, disaffected Obama voters, the convention may not be their best chance. Overnight ratings for the GOP convention suggested less than 10 percent of viewers were under age 35. The Pew poll found less than 30 percent of twenty-somethings were interested in the political conventions.

ROMNEY PREVIEW

In his big speech, Mitt Romney will make a direct appeal to voters who felt excited to cast a ballot for Barack Obama four years ago.

"If you felt that excitement when you voted for Barack Obama, shouldn't you feel that way now that he's President Obama?" Romney says in excerpts released before his Thursday night speech. "You know there's something wrong with the kind of job he's done as president when the best feeling you had, was the day you voted for him."

You've been let down, Romney's telling former Obama voters, by a presidency that lapsed into disappointment and division.

"Many Americans have given up on this president, but they haven't ever thought about giving up," Romney says. "Not on themselves. Not on each other. And not on America."

Riffing on Obama's 2008 catchphrase, "Yes we can," Romney plans to tell Americans, "Now is the moment when we CAN do something."

What can Americans do, according to Romney? Vote for him.

? Connie Cass ?Twitter http://twitter.com/ConnieCass

___

POLITICAL FOOTBALL

There may be large swaths of a Republican stronghold otherwise occupied during Mitt Romney's big speech Thursday night. College football debuts at the same time, and that can trump anything else on TV, especially in the pigskin-crazy South.

The marquee matchup happens down in Tennessee, with Steve Spurrier's No. 9 South Carolina Gamecocks taking on the Vanderbilt Commodores in Nashville at 7 p.m. EDT. But the GOP probably isn't worried about losing interest or votes in either South Carolina or Tennessee, both of which are normally reliable Republican states in presidential contests.

Oil falls as traders look to Fed talk on Friday

The price of oil fell Thursday as producers assessed the impact of Hurricane Isaac and traders waited to see if the Federal Reserve would act to boost the economy.

Benchmark oil fell 87 cents to finish trading at $94.62 in New York.

Oil companies evacuated many Gulf of Mexico platforms and refineries in advance of Isaac, which blew through as a hurricane before being downgraded to a tropical storm. They were assessing damage on Thursday.

Some 95 percent of the daily oil production in the Gulf of Mexico has been shut down, according to the Bureau of Safety and Environmental Enforcement.

The federal agency said workers have been evacuated from 509 production platforms, or 85 percent of manned platforms in the Gulf of Mexico. Workers have also been pulled from 50 drilling rigs, or 66 percent of the total, the agency said.

Energy consultant Jim Ritterbusch said traders are good at accounting for the risk of tropical storms and hurricanes, which are a regular fact of life in the Gulf of Mexico.

The bigger issue for the price of oil, he said, was the potential for news from the Federal Reserve on Friday. Investors will be listening to Fed Chairman Ben Bernanke's speech for hints of additional steps to spur borrowing and spending. Some economists doubt he will say anything dramatic.

Ritterbusch noted that stocks were down on Thursday, too.

"Financial markets are nervous," he said, adding that oil was being affected.

Meanwhile, the average price of gasoline rose more than 2 cents on Thursday to $3.826 per gallon. Isaac has forced several refineries along the Gulf Coast to close, and others are operating at reduced rates.

In other energy trading:

?Brent crude rose 11 cents to end at $112.65 a barrel.

? Heating oil rose less than a penny to finish at $3.1245 per gallon.

? Wholesale gasoline fell 1.77 cents to end at $3.0826 per gallon.

? Natural gas rose 6.3 cents, or 2.3 percent, to finish at $2.7480 per 1,000 cubic feet.

The government has estimated that nearly 72 percent of Gulf natural gas production has been suspended due to Isaac.

Prices rose even though more natural gas than expected was put into storage last week, according to the Energy Information Administration. It said 66 billion cubic feet of natural gas went into storage, more than the 58 billion to 62 billion cubic feet expected in a survey of analysts by Platts, the energy information arm of McGraw-Hill Cos.

Illinois governor rejects plan to expand gambling | The Salt Lake ...

FILE - In this Aug. 17, 2012 file photo Illinois Gov. Pat Quinn speaks with reporters at the Illinois state Capitol in Springfield. Chicago ? Gov. Pat Quinn on Tuesday rejected a bill to expand gambling in Illinois that would have made way for a land-based casino in Chicago, saying the proposal lacked sufficient regulatory oversight.

With his two immediate predecessors in prison, the Chicago Democrat said integrity must be a hallmark of the gambling plan, which also proposed establishing four new riverboat casinos and allowing slot machines at racetracks.

The most glaring omission from the bill "is the absence of strict ethical standards and comprehensive regulatory oversight. Illinois should never settle for a gaming bill that includes loopholes for mobsters," Quinn said in a statement announcing the veto.

He urged legislators to work with him on its shortcomings, although the bill?s House sponsor said his attempts to meet with Quinn have been rebuffed. Rep. Lou Lang, D-Skokie, predicted there would be enough House votes this fall to override Quinn?s veto.

At a suburban Chicago appearance late Tuesday morning, Quinn rejected that forecast.

"That veto will be sustained," he told reporters. "I think I did the right thing."

Supporters of the bill estimated the expansion could have brought in up to $1 billion a year, boost tourism and create 100,000 jobs for the state. Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel supported the establishment of a city casino. Opponents meanwhile warned of market saturation and raised concerns about the social costs.

The proposal would have established a city-owned Chicago casino with spots for 4,000 people to gamble at once. It also would have added riverboat casinos in Danville, Park City, Rockford and an undecided location in Chicago?s south suburbs. Each riverboat casino would have had 1,600 gambling positions and allowed Illinois? 10 existing casinos to grow.

Quinn, who isn?t opposed to gambling on principle, had said all along that he wanted a bill with stronger ethical protections. That includes barring the gambling industry from making political contributions. He said the proposal has "too many defects" for him to consider using his amendatory veto powers to change it.

"It?s one thing if you had to make some technical changes here and there," Quinn said Tuesday. "This bill just falls way short of what the people of Illinois need when it comes to ethics in government."

story continues below

In his veto message, Quinn took aim at the proposed Chicago casino, claiming the bill would have allowed it to play by different rules. He said the Illinois Gaming Board wouldn?t have the same regulatory authority over the Chicago outlet as it holds over other casinos in the state and that the city casino would not have to follow the state?s procurement code in handing out contracts.

That would leave taxpayer-financed contracts "vulnerable to organized crime, unsavory influence and potentially overpriced vendors," Quinn wrote.

In earlier responses to the governor?s critique, lawmakers offered follow-up legislation to address some of the concerns. However that wouldn?t be considered unless the initial law is signed, and Quinn has said he?d rather get all the legislation signed at once.

Lang said he would seek an override in the fall legislative session and dismissed the suggestion that Quinn might be open to discussing differences with the legislation?s authors.

"The bottom line is he doesn?t want to sign a gaming bill," Lang said. "If he had language to propose, he would have proposed it."

Quinn also criticized the legislation for providing too little support for public education. Past gambling expansions have been designed to bring in more revenue for public services such as schools, but the 1991 law that created riverboat casinos was intended to help economically depressed cities.

Chimpanzees create 'social traditions': Unique handclasp grooming behavior reveals local difference

ScienceDaily (Aug. 28, 2012) ? Researchers have revealed that chimpanzees are not only capable of learning from one another, but also use this social information to form and maintain local traditions.

A research collaboration between the Gonzaga University and the Max Planck Institute shows that the way in which chimpanzees groom each other depends on the community to which they belong. Specifically, it is the unique handclasp grooming behaviour that reveals this local difference.

The specific behaviour that the researchers focused on was the 'grooming handclasp', a behaviour where two chimpanzees clasp onto each other's arms, raise those arms up in the air, and groom each other with their free arm. This behaviour has only been observed in some chimpanzee populations. The question remained whether chimpanzees are instinctively inclined to engage in grooming handclasp behaviour, or whether they learn this behaviour from each other and pass it on to subsequent generations.

Edwin van Leeuwen and Katherine Cronin of the Comparative Cognitive Anthropology research group of the Max Planck Institute for Psycholinguistics led by Daniel Haun conducted their observations between 2007 and 2012 at the Chimfunshi Wildlife Orphanage Trust in Zambia. At Chimfunshi, a mix of wild- and captive-born chimpanzees live in woodlands in some of the largest enclosures in the world. The Max Planck team collaborated with students from Gonzaga University led by Mark Bodamer, a team of local chimpanzee caretakers, and Roger Mundry of the Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Anthropology in order to collect and comprehend the detailed chimpanzee data.

Previous research suggested that the grooming handclasp might be a cultural phenomenon, just like humans across cultures engage in different ways of greeting each other. However, these suggestions were primarily based on observations that some chimpanzee communities handclasp and others don't -- not whether there are differences between communities that engage in handclasping. Moreover, the early observations could have been explained by differences in genetic and/or ecological factors between the chimpanzee communities, which precluded the interpretation that the chimpanzees were exhibiting 'cultural' differences.

The present research shows that even between chimpanzee communities that engage in the grooming handclasp, subtle yet stable differences exist in the styles that they prefer: one chimpanzee group highly preferred the style where they would grasp each other's hands during the grooming, while another group engaged much more in a style where they would fold their wrists around each other's wrists.

"We don't know what mechanisms account for these differences," van Leeuwen says. "But our study at least reveals that these chimpanzee communities formed and maintained their own local grooming traditions over the last 5 years. Our observations may also indicate that chimpanzees can overcome their innate predispositions, potentially allowing them to manipulate their environment based on social constructs rather than on mere instincts."

Apart from the different style preferences of the chimpanzee communities, the research team also observed that the grooming handclasp behaviour was a long-lasting part of the chimpanzees' behavioural repertoire: the behaviour was even transmitted to the next generation of potential handclaspers.

"By following the chimpanzees over time, we were able to show that 20 young chimpanzees gradually developed the handclasp behaviour over the course of the five-year study. The first handclasps by young individuals were mostly in partnership with their mothers. These observations support the conclusion that these chimpanzees socially learn their local tradition, and that this might be evidence of social culture," Bodamer explains.

"Continued monitoring of these groups of chimpanzees will shed light on the question of how these group-traditions are maintained over time and potentially even why the chimpanzees like to raise their arms up in the air during social grooming in the first place," van Leeuwen adds.

South African adventurer shot in Peru

(AP) ? A young South African adventurer seeking to follow the Amazon River from its origin to its mouth was in stable condition in a Lima hospital Monday after being shot and robbed by a pair of youths while on Peruvian tributary, authorities said.

David du Plessis, 24, was shot three times by two young men Saturday while kayaking down the Ucayali River near the provincial capital of Pucallpa, said his father, Louis du Plessis.

"They set up an ambush and they shot him from the woods," he said. The first shot knocked David from the kayak, the second hit him as he headed for shore and the third when he reached shore, his father said.

"He realized the only way he could get away was to run" so he ran about three miles (5 kilometers) despite internal bleeding and a neck wound that interfered with his speech, arriving in a village wearing only swimming shorts and a T-shirt, said his father, who had flown from the United States to be with him.

The young adventurer, who had begun his journey in late June, was taken downriver in a motorized canoe and arrived in Pucallpa after dusk, said Margot Sanchez, whose brother speaks some English and alerted du Plessis' mother by phone.

"He was losing a lot of blood," said Sanchez.

"Our son is lucky to survive. It was 10 hours before he got to hospital," said the young man's mother, Robyn Wolff, from Durban, South Africa.

David du Plessis was flown to Lima on Sunday, thanks in part to employees of the local subsidiary of the beverage company SABMiller, his parents said.

He was in intensive care at the Anglo-American Hospital. The hospital's medical director, Dr. Edgar Tejada, said he was in stable condition.

David du Plessis has temporarily lost some hearing, had to have fluid drained from one lung and apparently has a pellet lodged in or near his heart, said his father, a U.S.-based yacht captain retired from the South African navy.

"If he had gotten shot with anything other than a shotgun he would not be here with us. He is very, very lucky." said Louis du Plessis.

The regional police commander in Pucallpa, Col. Cesar Augusto Larrea, told The Associated Press that investigators had gone upriver to try to locate the assailants but had so far made no arrests.

He said he did not know exactly where it happened: "There are a lot of small villages up there."

Larrea said it was not the first such attack on a foreigner in the area but he said he lacked information about previous attacks because he was new to the post.

Wolff said her son had obtained a permit from the Peruvian military before entering the zone where he was attacked and that the military had warned him that it was a dangerous area. After she learned from Sanchez's brother that her son had been shot, Wolff turned to his Facebook page, "World Wonderer - The Amazon," to seek help in organizing his evacuation to Lima.

Louis de Plessis said his son had traveled last year by bicycle from Cairo, Egypt, to South Africa.

Before heading down the river, David du Plessis climbed Peru's 18,363-foot (5,597-meter) Mount Mismi, which some explorers say is the most distant source of the Amazon River, according to his blog. It said he reached the summit in late July.

His father said he had planned to join his son, known as "Davey," on the Amazon from Iquitos, Peru, to Manaus, Brazil.

Tim Cook: Year One

Tim Cook: Year One

Tim Cook became CEO of Apple one year ago yesterday, following the retirement of Steve Jobs. A soft-spoken, measured, methodical gentleman from the South, he'd been Apple's COO for years, and ran the company on several occasions during Steve Jobs' medical leaves of absence. A logistical and supply-chain genius, he took Apple from being better if more expensive, to much better at prices the competition couldn't begin to match. He helped take Apple from a computer company with a small if premium market share to a consumer electronic juggernaut that could launch products across the world at an unbelievable pace.

As CEO, over the course of the last year, Tim Cook's Apple launched the iPhone 4S, the new iPad, and the Retina MacBook Pro. They released OS X Mountain Lion and previewed iOS 6. They held the Lets Talk iPhone, the Education event, the See and Touch event, and WWDC 2012.

Cook was named one of Time's 100 most influential people. He went to Washington and to China. He spoke to Goldman Sachs and spoke at and the D10 Conference. He announced Apple would begin a new charitable matching program for employees.

He dealt with accusations over Chinese working conditions, and the odd attention of the New York Times.

They lost Steve Jobs, who co-founded the company and, through single act of will, made Apple and a part of our culture what it is today. But they've kept his legacy very much alive.

Apple's had record breaking quarter after record breaking quarter and won a $1 billion dollar verdict against Samsung.

It was a momentous year by any standards, and it was only Tim Cook's first.

Here's to year two.
