Samsung outs Garnet Red Edition Galaxy Tab 2 7.0 in the US, prices it at $220

Samsung outs Garnet Red Edition Galaxy Tab 2 70 in the US, prices it at $220

Just as we saw with AT&T's Garnet Red Galaxy S III, Samsung has now introduced yet another device that's wrapped in a similar color scheme -- and, hey, with Valentine's Day just around the corner, what better time, right? The difference here, however, is the South Korean company's including a matching case as part of this special edition Galaxy Tab 2 7.0, with the newfangled bundle set to be available for $220 when it goes on sale this week. Additionally, Samsung's 7-inch Garnet Red Tab 2 will be shipping with Jelly Bean already onboard, while other internal specs won't be any different that the ones we became familiar with last year -- ones such as the 1,024 x 600 TFT display, 1GHz, dual-core TI OMAP CPU, 8GB of internal storage and, of course, that handy IR blaster. You'll have to snag one quick if you're interested, though, as Samsung has told us the blooming Tab 2 7.0 will -- much like other peculiar sets -- only be available for a limited time at shops like Amazon, Walmart, Office Depot, Tiger Direct, Fry's Electronics and Toys R Us.

Dozens killed over soccer riot sentences in Morsi's Egypt

The wave of violence in Port Said, Suez, and Cairo is a symptom of an unresolved political crisis provoked by President Mohamed Morsi.?

By Kristen Chick,?Correspondent / January 27, 2013

Egyptian security officials say that 38 people have died in the Mediterranean city of Port Said after a judge sentenced 21 people to death in connection to one of the world's deadliest incidents of soccer violence.

Violence continued in the city of Port Said today when three people were killed and hundreds wounded during the funeral for some of the at least 35 people who were killed in rioting there yesterday. The violence began after a court sentenced 21 people to death for a deadly soccer riot last year.

Violent protests against President Mohamed Morsi also continued in other cities across Egypt over the weekend. The Egyptian Army was deployed in both Port Said and Suez, where protesters attacked police stations and government buildings after police killed at least nine people during anti-Morsi protests on Friday, the second anniversary of the uprising that unseated former President Hosni Mubarak. Clashes between protesters and police continued in Cairo.

The wave of violence roiling the nation is the largest challenge yet for President Morsi. Elected last summer, he provoked a popular backlash when he grabbed power by sidestepping the judiciary, and pushed a new constitution to a vote despite the anger of the opposition. He and his party had portrayed the document as a path to stability. While the violence in Port Said is separate from the anti-Morsi protests taking place in other cities, analysts say in both cases the unrest is a symptom of an unresolved political crisis and the decreasing legitimacy of state institutions.

?I think it's indicative of the way in which the authority and legitimacy of the state have receded, and is reflective of a very deep-seated political crisis," says Michael Hanna, a fellow at the New York-based Century Foundation who is currently in Cairo. "It's going to be very difficult to reestablish that authority because they are acting unilaterally. And the tools that they are employing to try to reestablish authority are the tools of repression that have and continue to generate a destabilizing effect in the form of protests and mass mobilization," he says of Morsi's government.

A constitution drafting process that marginalized the opposition, and bringing the document to a vote despite their protests, ?served to institutionalize the political crisis,? he says. ?And I think we're seeing some of the fruits of that. It's been coupled with frustration that he has not been able to deliver tangible reforms or improvements in people's lives.?

Violence broke out in Port Said yesterday, when a court in Cairo announced the sentencing of 21 people, mostly Port Said soccer fans,?to death for the killing of 74 people in a Port Said soccer stadium last year. After a game between the Port Said team and Cairo's Al Ahly club, men from the Port Said fan section rushed the Ahly fans and attacked them. Some were beaten or thrown off the stands, while others suffocated or were trampled to death as they attempted to escape through the exit and found the door locked.

Fans of the Ahly team known as Ultras, who have participated in many of the protests since the uprising, celebrated the verdict in Cairo. In the days leading up to the verdict, they had threatened violence if it was unsatisfactory. But in Port Said, supporters of those sentenced to death rioted, attacking police stations, the prison where the defendants were housed, and government buildings, blocking roads and setting fire to tires in the street. Two of the dead were police officers.

Port Said residents said they felt their young men had become scapegoats for a crime many believe was planned and carried out with complicity of police. The remainder of the 73 defendants in the case, including nine security officials, will face a verdict on March 9.

A funeral procession today for most of those killed yesterday was interrupted by gunfire and tear gas, according to witnesses. Reuters reported that the gunfire killed three.?Mourners chanted ?Morsi is God's enemy? during the funeral, reported the Associated Press. At a funeral for the policemen killed in Port Said, police who were attending heckled the Interior Minister, forcing him to leave, reported local newspapers.

Cairo: fourth day of clashes

In Cairo, hundreds of young men clashed with police near Tahrir Square for the fourth day in a row. Clashes broke out even before the large protest against Morsi that took place Friday to mark the second anniversary of the uprising. Police fired tear gas as young men threw rocks and lit tires on fire to provide a smoke screen.

?We want to deliver a message to the president that he's not welcome, that he doesn't represent us,? says protester Muhaab Selim. ?Everything he promised us, he didn't do. He's become the president of the people he is from, not of all the people,? he says, referring to the Muslim Brotherhood.

Morsi offered his condolences to the families of those killed and called for peaceful protests in Twitter messages in the early hours of Saturday. Yesterday he convened the newly established National Defense Council for the first time, to discuss troop deployments to Suez and Port Said with top generals. The council called for a national dialogue, and said it may declare a state of emergency and curfew in areas of unrest.

Mustapha Kamel Al Sayyid, a political science professor?at the American University in Cairo, says Morsi is treating the situation like a security crisis, not a political one. ?It?does not seem that he sees this as a political problem that requires active engagement with the opposition, and revolutionary groups in order to get a negotiated end to this situation,? he says. ?I think this signals a loss of legitimacy of President Morsi.?

But he also points out that the protests have not been propelled by the opposition movement. ?These are spontaneous explosions of discontent on the part of ordinary citizens,? he says. The coalition formed by prominent politicians and movements that oppose Morsi, called the National Salvation Front, issued a set of demands yesterday, calling on the president to form a national unity government and investigate recent violence, after calling for early presidential elections.

Dutch Queen abdicates, Willem-Alexander to succeed

AMSTERDAM (Reuters) - Dutch Queen Beatrix, who turns 75 on Thursday, announced she was abdicating in favor of her son, Prince Willem-Alexander, telling her country it was time to hand the crown to the next generation after more than three decades on the throne.

Willem-Alexander, 45, who will be sworn in as king on April 30, is married to Princess Maxima, who comes from Argentina, and has three young children.

Decades of grooming for the throne involved shaking off his image as a beer-drinking fraternity boy whose blunt comments upset the press and politicians and did not fit the image of the Netherlands' low-key "bicycling monarchy".

Speaking calmly in a television broadcast, Beatrix, who once faced scandal over her father's involvement in a bribery case and whose middle son lies in a coma after a skiing accident, said she was stepping down because she felt Willem-Alexander was now ready to take her place on the throne.

"I am not stepping down because the tasks of the function are too great, but out of the conviction that the responsibilities of our country should be passed on to a new generation," she said.

"It is with the greatest confidence that on April 30 of this year I will pass on the kingship to my son, the Prince of Orange. He and Princess Maxima are entirely ready for their future tasks."

The decision appeared popular with ordinary Dutch people.

"She's been a strong, hard-working woman but it is good that she is now giving room to a younger generation," said Mandy, a 26-year-old who works as a secretary in Amsterdam.

A constitutional monarchy, the Netherlands has reduced the involvement of the Royal House in politics. The queen had taken part in forming government coalitions by appointing a mediator, a role that raised questions about undue influence on the democratic process and which was scrapped last year.

Sources close to the royal family said Beatrix did not want to go until she felt her son was ready and his children were old enough. She also wanted to ensure that anti-immigrant, euroskeptic politician Geert Wilders, of whom she disapproved, was in no danger of assuming real political influence.

She alluded in speeches to the need for tolerance and multi-culturalism, comments that were seen as criticisms of Wilders' anti-Islamic views - while Wilders criticized the queen, who has a penchant for huge hats, when she donned a Muslim headcovering on a trip to the Middle East.

Wilders' poor showing at the last election and loss of influence in politics, could well have contributed to her decision to abdicate.

FIRST KING IN A CENTURY

With Willem-Alexander on the throne, the Netherlands is likely to revive the debate about the role of the monarchy and the high cost of maintaining the royal household, particularly when ordinary Dutch people are having to deal with austerity measures.

"There is an ongoing discussion about the role of the royals in a modern society, and that discussion needs to continue," said Diederik Samsom, leader of the Labour Party, which is part of Prime Minister Mark Rutte's coalition government.

As queen, Beatrix often headed trade missions, most recently in Singapore, and was involved in promoting Dutch defense sales in the Middle East.

Beatrix, whose full name is Beatrix Wilhelmina Armgard, Princess of Oranje-Nassau, Princess of Lippe-Biesterfeld, has been on the throne since 1980, when she took over from Queen Juliana.

Dutch queens have made a tradition of stepping aside for the next generation over the last century. Queen Wilhemina handed over to her daughter in 1948 after half a century on the throne. Queen Juliana was in deteriorating mental health when she made way for the 42-year-old Beatrix in 1980.

Willem-Alexander, who majored in history and has specialized in water management, will become Willem IV -- the first Dutch king in more than a century.

SCANDALS, TRAGEDY

The Dutch royal family is popular with the public, but like the British royals, it has not escaped scandal and controversy.

While she was still Crown Princess, Beatrix married former German diplomat Claus von Amsberg in 1966, and faced street protests over her choice of husband.

Von Amsberg had been a member of the Hitler Youth, albeit involuntarily, and as a teenager served briefly in the army of the country which occupied the Netherlands in World War Two.

Prince Claus later underwent treatment for severe depression between in the 1980s, blaming the difficulty he found in reconciling his private life with his responsibilities as a public figure.

In the 1970s, Beatrix intervened in the most serious crisis to hit the royal family since the war, threatening not to take up the throne should parliament decide to prosecute her father Prince Bernhard for taking bribes in the Lockheed scandal.

The queen was emotionally shaken when a man drove his car into a Queen's Day procession in 2009.

Willem-Alexander, the queen's eldest son, was once the darling of Dutch tabloids because of his love of fast cars, good-looking women, and partying.

He caused a stir when he married a commoner whose father was a civilian minister in Argentina's military dictatorship from 1976-1983. But his bride, Maxima Zorrigueta, quickly won over the public with her easy manner and quick mastery of Dutch, and often seems to be more popular than her husband.

Last year, the family faced tragedy when Willem-Alexander's younger brother, Prince Friso, had a skiing accident in Austria while going off-piste. He is still in a coma.

(AP) ? Police on Saturday arrested a man suspected of fatally shooting a police officer and critically wounding two sheriff's deputies after allegedly setting fire to a mobile home in south Louisiana, where an elderly man's body was found.

A Chitimacha tribal officer was pronounced dead at the scene of the shootings in Charenton, while two St. Mary Parish sheriff's deputies were critically wounded and taken to local hospitals, said Louisiana State Police Trooper Stephen Hammons.

Hammons said the officers were responding to a report of an armed man walking down a road near the Cypress Bayou Casino when Wilbert Thibodeaux, 48, of Charenton allegedly shot them.

"Thibodeaux fired at the Chitimacha Officer, fatally wounding him," state police said in a news release. "As two St. Mary Deputies, who were in the same car, arrived at the scene Thibodeaux fired multiple shots hitting the deputies. During the encounter, Thibodeaux was shot."

Investigators found the burned remains of a man after extinguishing a fire at a mobile home that Thibodeaux is suspected of setting before the officers confronted him, Hammons said.

Police identified the deceased man in the mobile home as Eddie Lyons, 78, of Charenton. "Detectives suspect Lyons was shot by Thibodeaux before the fire," state police said in a news release.

Thibodeaux was treated at a hospital for a gunshot wound that wasn't considered life-threatening and released, according to Hammons, who said investigators were questioning him Saturday evening. Charges against him are pending.

The state Fire Marshal's office is investigating the fire.

"Today is a difficult day for our partners in St. Mary Parish," Col. Mike Edmonson, the State Police superintendent, said in a statement. "My thoughts and prayers are with the deputies and the officer's families tonight. I know the coming days and weeks will be difficult ones for the men and women of the Chitimacha Police Department and the St. Mary Parish Sheriff's Office. We will assist their agencies in any way we can during these trying times."

The casino is run by the Chitimacha Tribe of Louisiana and is less than a quarter-mile from the scene of the shootings. Hammons said the shootings occurred near but not on tribal land.

"Everybody is just in shock. It's small-town America," said Jacqueline Junca, the tribe's secretary and treasurer.

Police didn't immediately release the names of the officers. Authorities said they will do so at a Monday news conference.

Tribe councilman Toby Darden said the slain officer was married and had two grown children, but he declined to give his name.

"He's a real great guy. Extremely dedicated to his job. Very brave," Darden said.

He was one of seven full-time officers who patrol a 260-acre reservation that has roughly 150 homes, a grocery store, a small school and government offices.

"Everybody knows the officers personally," Darden said. "It's devastating."

Junca said the tribe has around 1,200 members, roughly half of whom live on the reservation.

Access to and from the casino was restricted for roughly 90 minutes as a precautionary measure while police responded to the shooting, said casino spokeswoman Nancy Herrington. Charenton is located about 45 miles southeast of Lafayette.

"We are very much in business and have been," Herrington said later Saturday. "We have events tonight. All of those are taking place."

A spokeswoman for the sheriff's office and a tribal police dispatcher referred questions about the shootings to the State Police.

"We've got a lot of unanswered questions," State Police Capt. Doug Cain said.

One of the injured deputies was taken to a hospital in New Orleans and the other was taken to a Lafayette hospital. Both were listed in critical but stable condition Saturday evening, Hammons said.

Parker Movie Review Movie Review, Christian Reviews and Ratings

Release Date: January 25, 2013
Rating: R for strong violence, language throughout and brief sexual content/nudity
Genre: Action
Run Time: 118 min.
Director: Taylor Hackford
Cast: Jason Statham, Jennifer Lopez, Michael Chiklis, Wendell Pierce, Clifton Collins Jr., Patti Lupone, Micah A. Hauptman, Bobby Cannavale, Nick Nolte, Emma Booth, Carlos Carrasco

The first credit at the conclusion of Parker, the new crime caper starring Jason Statham, reads, "In memory of Donald E. Westlake." The shoutout to author Westlake, who wrote a series of Parker novels under the pen name Richard Stark, feels appropriate, given that Parker director Taylor Hackford and writer John J. McLaughlin (Hitchcock, Black Swan) have done justice to the tone of Westlake?s series of novels centered on Parker.

That?s not to say you should rush out and buy a ticket. Westlake?s character is a criminal who, over the course of 24 novels, gets caught up in a number of heists, jobs-gone-bad, double crossings and back-stabbings. He uses his wits to stay a step ahead of those pursuing him, somehow coming out ahead of his rivals. His mission in this story and others is, in a word, revenge.

The Parker character has been seen on the big screen multiple times over the decades, although Westlake?s character has gone by different names until now. He?s best known as the protagonist (named Walker) of John Boorman?s Point Blank (1967), and was played by Mel Gibson in 1999?s Payback, where the character?s name was Porter.

This latest Parker story, based on Westlake?s Flashfire, starts with the title character teaming with a group of lowlifes who include Michael Chiklis (TV?s The Shield), Wendell Pierce (HBO?s The Wire) and Clifton Collins Jr. (Sunshine Cleaning, Extract). They hit a county fair that?s flush with cash, but when Parker demands his fair share of the haul, the team turns on him and leaves him for dead.

Parker survives, and so does his moral code, such as it is. "When I enter into an agreement, terms must be honored on both sides," Parker explains. Otherwise, chaos ensues. And ensue it does, as Parker tracks down the men who wronged him, with the help of Leslie (Jennifer Lopez), a down-on-her-luck Florida real-estate agent who needs a big payday of her own.

Parker may have his own code, but it?s not based on anything greater than himself. He respects his criminal mentor (Nick Nolte) and tries, in his own twisted way, to love his girlfriend (Emma Booth) and remain faithful to her (he doesn?t resist the divorced Leslie?s kisses, but refuses offers to take her out for drinks). Yet the story of Parker is a basic revenge plot, and however well done it may be, it?s still centered on motives that are far from Romans 12:19.

"Civilized people need to follow rules but these are mine: I don?t steal from people who can?t afford it and I don?t hurt people who don?t deserve it," says Parker, laying out another of his axioms. ?I?m just going to put things right.?

We can?t ultimately "put things right" on our own, of course, but in Parker?s world, trying to do so is a form of honor. He's doing what he thinks is orderly and proper.

So is director Hackford. For the first time in a long time, a filmmaker has put things right in bringing the Parker character to the screen. If Parker doesn?t capture every nuance of Westlake?s novels, it at least feels true to their spirit.

However, obtaining trademarks and patents, as well as protecting them, can be a tough task, and that is why you need the services of a patent and trademark attorney. You need to consult a patent law firm in the United States in order to engage the services of a patent and trademark attorney. Such an attorney will help you obtain a trademark, copyright or patent more easily, and ensure that all your intellectual property rights (IPR) relating to trademarks, patents and copyrights are fully protected. These attorneys have decades of experience in the field, and are the best in their profession. They can also prepare and negotiate a number of other complex legal agreements.Their great expertise, however, lies in trademark, copyright and patent law New York. When you contact them, they respond immediately by email or phone. You can even visit their office on a prior appointment. The initial consultation is free of charge in most cases. During the initial consultation, the patent and trademark attorney will provide you with recommendations on the initial plan of action, which will differ depending on whether you are seeking to purchase an IPR or seeking to protect an existing one.

The IP lawyer New York will help you choose a trademark that best represents your business, while using his immense knowledge and resources to ensure that the trademark does not match any other known trademark worldwide. Then, he will file a trademark application covering the use of the selected mark on your goods or services. If you already have a trademark whose validity period has expired, he can file another application for renewal.Obtaining patents can be tough because normally, courts do not allow patents on several items of essential public consumption e.g. medicines or genetically engineered foodstuffs. Additionally, there are several kinds of patents, including patents for industrial processes, complicating the issue. The patent and trademark attorney will guide you about the kind of inventions which can be provided patent protection under US laws, as well as the intricate procedure for obtaining a patent. He will also provide a good estimate of the costs involve d in obtaining and maintaining a patent. Most attorneys are well versed with the various technologies involved in production. However, if the attorney feels that he lacks the information, he has an excellent coterie of professionals who can guide him on any technology. Finally, you can find good attorneys in all places in the US whether you want a Putnam County patent attorney, an NJ patent attorney, or an attorney handling Bergen county patent law.

Timing Curious for Christie's Announcements

During the very same hour of President Obama's second inauguration, New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie, who is often mentioned as a potential 2016 Republican presidential contender, sent out two separate announcements.

The first from his gubernatorial campaign: "Governor Chris Christie will be visiting the Hilton Newark Airport on Tuesday morning to accept the second major endorsement of his campaign." (The campaign did not provide information about who will be endorsing him.)

The second statement commemorated Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day. Christie, who praised President Obama's efforts in the wake of Hurricane Sandy, which devastated portions of coastal New Jersey, did not mention the president's inauguration.

"Dr. King was the paradigm of strength in triumphing over adversity and racial injustice to achieve what seemed impossible to so many for so long. His legacy stands as an eternal reminder of his sacrifice and the progress he achieved and which we are obliged to protect for every citizen of our state and nation. I join New Jerseyans in honoring Dr. King's life and work and his uncompromising commitment to peacefully working toward freedom and equality for all Americans," Christie said in the statement.

92% Skyfall

All Critics (283) | Top Critics (46) | Fresh (260) | Rotten (23)

It's been a long time since I enjoyed a Bond movie so much.

'Quantum of Solace,' was a dour, dire letdown. This picture's a substantial bounce back, and easily the best Craig Bond picture. Emotional depth and all.

Sam Mendes' 'Skyfall': sleek, slithery, sensual

The cool accomplishment of Skyfall, 23rd in the Broccoli franchise, is that it seems a necessary, rather than mandatory, addition to the year's popular culture.

Among the most ambitious imaginings of Bond to date: dark, supple, and punctuated with moments of unanticipated visual brilliance.

Mendes' approach to action is classical and elegant - no manic editing and blurry unintelligible images here - but what makes the movie special is the attention he pays his actors.

The film serves as a trip back to the beginning of the 50-year-old cinematic legend and the promise of a golden future with Craig in the role of 007.

What propels this grisly chapter is the characters' keen sense of agency.

Skyfall epitomizes what a Bond movie should be, and its director, for once, justifiably deserves much of the credit.

Skyfall isn't quite a throwback to the absurd thrills of the 007 films of old, but it does inject some fun back into the franchise.

As the saying goes, you've got to shake 22 Bond films, before the 23rd is stirred to perfection. Without a doubt, this is the best James Bond movie.

James Bond looks broken and weary, an embodiment of a traditional model of international spydom, the one premised on national borders, white-Western-wealthy entitlements, and excessive consumptions of alcohol, cars, and women.

I have no compulsion whatsoever in declaring Skyfall, in terms of cinematography, the best looking Bond film ever ... Action movies simply don't look like this - but ... this is no ordinary action movie.

Sentimental touches underscore the fun and frivolity of Bond's past while relishing the brutal landscape of the modern day super-spy.

This makes the list of truly great 007 films alongside the list of Goldfinger, Thunderball, Live And Let Die, Licence To Kill, Goldeneye and Casino Royale.

Worlds collide in this near-brilliant, meticulously refined 21st-century redefinition of James Bond.

Sam Mendes has done a magnificent job, creating both a relevant and timeless entry into the Bond canon, while deftly adding homages to the series' past.

...tough and grim but still spry ... feels like something of a rearguard action in the case of the British Empire.

Sometimes the old ways are the best. This is a theme and repeated line running throughout the new James Bond film Skyfall and never has it been more true.

Skyfall does what all of the best franchise entries do: it makes you want to see the next one immediately. Consider me (physically) shaken and (emotionally) stirred.

Not the best Bond movie ever but a very good one; a little darker but still unsettled as to what type overall it wants to be.

Too often this martini is sloppy, not smooth.

This is one of the 50-year-old series' most exciting and commandingly compelling entries. Yes, James Bond is back to being James Bond.

Seen against the ineffectual backdrop of 2008's Quantum of Solace, this is a return to form but it doesn't exceed Craig's impressive debut as Bond in 2006's Casino Royale.

Skyfall is not, of course, ''darker'' or more serious than previous Bond films, but it's more knowing about its own conventions.

One of the most popular activities that take place on the internet is the use of email, which 92 percent of online adult users do every day. The Pew Internet and American Life Project came up with this statistic showing email use being second only to search. Therefore, it shouldn?t be a surprise that Rochester web development companies focus on providing email hosting along with other important marketing services used for generating success on the web. Identifying quality email hosting services is achieved by understanding what elements should be involved. For example, quality email hosting should involve the tools needed to filter spam and viruses.

It?s important to find Rochester web design companies that offer solutions to filter spam and viruses from email. This information is obtained by asking questions or researching Rochester web development companies online. Rochester web development companies offering email hosting solutions should also offer plenty of customizable configurations and the ability to handle multiple accounts. Custom domain names are also commonly used, especially by internet marketers and online business owners. Most people don?t realize the first email was sent in 1971 on a system known as ARPANET. ARPANET is considered the forerunner of our modern internet today.

During Bill Clinton?s presidency, Bill Clinton sent two emails. One email was considered a test email while the other email was sent to John Glenn, who was aboard the space shuttle at that time. Today, email is an important element for communications and advertisements. People should do their research on Rochester web development companies because not all of them offer quality email hosting programs. Your particular need for email hosting will dictate what type of plan to choose. Some plans are designed to handle a significant amount of email and accounts, while other plans are used for smaller business owners that need only a bare minimum of services.

Better, Stronger, Faster 2013

I can feel the speed-of-everything accelerating. The vibration of human activity is rising.

In setting Saasu?s group strategy we have to observe what?s going on around us ? but not just in our software industry. That?s too narrow, so we look broadly to avoid limiting our creativity which is required for step-out results.

So what are the themes in twenty thirteen, and what does they mean for Saasu?

1. Micro-fication

There is a trend away from big devices to smaller devices or multi-device systems. e.g. Saasu recently changed to 12 cores per server in our private cloud. Chip makers stack cores to make immensely powerful multi-core servers, making lots of small devices that mimic the power and effect of a single large device. In astronomy, array telescopes are replacing the dishes (photo above). Retail is seeing smartphones and tablets replacing point of sale terminals. You can see a trend ?in the home also, moving to many small devices away from a single shared PC.

2. Software applications continue to eat the world

The ?Why? cloud question of 2012 is becoming ?How?. Adoption is at 5% for online accounting and will quickly accelerate to 10-15% this year. Marc Andressen was spot on with his comment that software is eating the world:

  • CD?s > Downloads
  • 1 million Foxconn employees > 300,000 Foxbot robots. (Foxconn make iPhones)
  • Navman > Google Maps
  • Books > eBooks
  • Sales staff > Sales Automation Systems
  • In person conversations > Social networks
  • Retail > eTail
  • Paper > Paperless
  • Filing paper > Searching Data
  • Motorola > Google
  • Shoe shops > Zappos
  • People driving > Software driving
  • Fitness coach > Fitness apps and devices

3. Devices take-over desktops

2013 will likely be the crossover year where devices exceed desktops. Saasu left the desktop as the primary design focus some time ago and shifted to tablets and mobile. Customers will expect all the features supported across all the platforms. Old accounting software companies currently building and supporting online accounting for desktops are building the very thing we see consumers starting to abandon.

4. Attention economy

Socialising applications and content portals are re-wiring many of us into habitually checking for updates, info and insights. Designers of the systems have learned to tap into at least a dozen intrinsic motivators which turns seemingly harmless apps into ego feeding, attention sucking machines. Note it?s not just gamification, this is just one piece.

Humans are responive to guilt and the fear of missing out (aka FOMO). Essentially it is forming a type of mental slavery via guilt and missed experience in a social sense.

Getting the attention of your customers amongst all of this emotional warfare for minds is tough. Having a website that ignores most intrinsic motivators doesn?t cut it any more. It has limited usefulness in the attention economy. To keep customers interested you must give them value in every interaction. Buy the right to get their attention next time. Information is a near-free commodity now, so that won?t work. You need to give them what they really want ? simplification and automation. That?s about more time which and thus happiness.

Curation is rising to address the information fire hose phenomena. The rise of niche social networks is almost certain to cause problems for Facebook this year. You can see the panic already through their acquisitions. Users attention will shift to the networks that best align with their personal and business interests. Standing in front of Facebook?s firehose isn?t as much fun as it used to be.

5. Corporatocracy

Sadly, capitalism is changing. ?Too big to fail? are for me the most important words acted on in the last decade. Capitalism is now very impure. We are now more than ever exist in a Corporatocracy run by governments and banks. Unfortunately for small businesses, service companies, retailers and manufacturers you aren?t in that club. If you think this is USA only, it?s not. The EU, UK, Australia are all actively heading in this direction. You need tools that cut costs, create efficiency and save time for your business. You directly or indirectly fund Payroll Tax, Company Tax, PAYE, Capital Gains, Super/Pensions, Fringe Benefits, Workers comp/insurances and now Carbon Tax. Expect more tax and expect more compliance. That?s the nature of the system we live in.

One of the big unspoken risks this year is inflation. Unfortunately you can?t keep printing money to save the financial system without a price to pay. Quantitative easing will come home to roost in 2013. The potential for civil unrest if any of the major global economies rolls over is there. Governments will do everything they can to stop that eventuating but the contagion risk is something we have in our risk waterfall. We don?t know what this means for internet and power continuity of service. Outlier ?black swan? events are by nature hard to allow for.

In any case we think your data needs to be in two or more locations. A single country, data centre or supplier isn?t acceptable mitigation by our standards. We also think you also need to be able to download your data to your PC. This may sound contrarian for the CEO of a cloud company to be talking this way, but my career has been about understanding risk. All business models have risks and the cloud?s biggest risk is a dependency on the internet. I know our customers will enjoy keeping a copy of their Saasu file for backup purposes on their own systems.

These are risks I?m describing, not expectations ? so don?t read them as paranoia, but instead as precaution. You should expect all your service providers to openly disclose, assess and deal with risk.

What is Saasu doing in 2013?

Saasu runs strategic and risk models which look at changes occurring inside and outside our industry. We use these to facilitate good decisions. We know that decision making is the single most important activity a business engages in. For competitive reasons I can?t elaborate on all our decisions for 2013, but here are some that give you some insights into our thinking:

  • Your data is stored in at least two different geographic locations and with at least two different cloud infrastructure suppliers [Completed]
  • Building the ability to get all your financial data out in a single download, plus the ability to load that data back up into the Saasu application.
  • Tablets, phone and laptop centric design instead of desktop centric design.
  • Design that moves more toward searching instead of listing data.
  • Focus on building a clean, clear, engineered product that?s great value.

Saasu Version 2 is in build, and it?s a business application that is a step out beyond other online accounting systems. We recognize that the business owners are the risk takers, they?re the ones with huge emotional and capital investments in their dream. We aren?t shy in saying we exist to solve accounting, operational and compliance problems for business owners. We partner with accounting and bookkeeping firms who have that same vision for their clients as we do.

We will support more devices in a clean, clear and engineered way that scales with business growth. We?ll do this by keeping to our values and listening to you.

Thanks for your business in 2012 and we wish you well for 2013.

Essential Certification For A Tech Career | CAREEREALISM

Tech CareerDo you want to get into a tech career? Getting formally certified is an important career step in many skill-oriented industries, as employers almost always prefer candidates with established credentials to those who lack them. Across the board, many jobs become available when older, experienced professionals retire or move on to supervisory positions, and usually managers are not able to replace an experienced worker with a beginner.

Formal certification is proof that you have completed a rigorous career preparation program and displayed some competence in applying relevant skills, which in turn makes you far more employable.

Since the tech industry is a highly skill-focused environment, getting certification is an especially important step towards a successful career. Not every tech job explicitly requires certification, but many do; furthermore, even positions that do not require applicants to be certified may encourage or recommend certification.

Getting certified doesn?t just increase your chances of getting an entry-level job, either. The skills you acquire during the certification process will add depth and breadth to your abilities as an IT professional, and those abilities will help you make an impact wherever you work and earn consideration for promotions and new opportunities. Besides giving the satisfaction of a job well done, those skills will help you build a foundation for a successful career.

Certification In The Tech Industry

Since the tech industry includes a dizzying array of specialties and positions, there is a corresponding variety of useful certifications. For instance, the Computing Technology Industry Association (CompTIA) offers many specialized certifications in networking, security, servers and storage, to name a few.

Microsoft?s offerings include database, desktop, developer and server certifications. Tech professionals who seek certification through these and other organizations are likely to find their career prospects improved, especially if they work in specialized settings.

Perhaps the most universally accepted credentials anywhere in the industry, however, are the Cisco certifications. Cisco offers dozens of specialized certifications at the entry, associate, professional, expert and architect levels, perhaps the best-known of which is the Cisco Certified Network Associate (CCNA) certification.

CCNA-certified professionals have demonstrated their ability to install, configure, operate and troubleshoot mid-sized networks, to deal with security threats and to understand networking concepts and terminology. This broad range of skills prepares certified professionals for many positions in the IT field.

The Certification Process

Preparing to take the CCNA examination is a lengthy process that requires diligence, determination and focus. Although some professionals get ready through the exam independently, the most common way to prepare is to complete an information technology degree or certificate program.

The best way to prepare is to pursue that information technology degree through an accredited college or university that is certified as a Cisco Networking Academy; these institutions offer programs that include general IT skills as well as specific information relevant to the Cisco certification exam. The official Cisco Learning Network sells learning resources for exam preparation and unauthorized resources exist, but there is no guarantee that they will impart the skills needed to pass the test.

As an additional stepping stone on the way to the CCNA, Cisco offers the Cisco Certified Entry Networking Technician (CCENT) certification. The CCENT requires only a single, 90-minute test and significantly less preparation than the CCNA, making it an ideal option for newcomers to Cisco networking.

Besides qualifying for entry-level positions on the basis of this certification alone, CCENT-certified professionals can obtain the CCNA by taking another relatively short test. Earning the CCENT first thus breaks up the certification process into two more manageable pieces.

The Importance Of Cisco Certification

In the fast-growing and highly competitive field of information technology, having certification is an important advantage. When a hiring manager sees a Cisco certification on a resume, he or she knows that the applicant has completed the extensive preparation process for the Cisco exam and demonstrated job-relevant skills on a challenging test.

That?s not to say that certification is the only factor involved in getting hired, but because the certification exams are standardized, they serve as a baseline for hiring decisions.

Furthermore, completing the certification process dramatically improves a professional?s breadth of knowledge. Self-taught tech professionals often possess a hodgepodge of skills that align with their own interests; they may be highly skilled in a few areas and entirely lacking in others. The rigorous program required to become Cisco-certified fills in those gaps and ensures that the certified professional has at least some knowledge of the broader field of networking.

Finally, entry- or associate-level Cisco certification opens the door to ongoing professional development, as CCNA-certified professionals can move on to expert-, professional- and architect-level certifications later in their career. Getting Cisco certification now helps to ensure opportunities to keep demonstrating your mastery of your field throughout a long and successful career.

National Day of Service calls on Americans to serve others

President Obama and first lady Michelle Obama paint a bookshelf at Burrville Elementary School in Washington, D.C., on the National Day of Service on Saturday, January 19 2013.

By Andrew Mach, Staff Writer, NBC News

On the cusp of President Barack Obama?s second inauguration and a national holiday to honor civil rights leader Martin Luther King Jr., a National Day of Service began Saturday around the country, calling on Americans to volunteer and serve others.

During the whirlwind weekend to mark the end of the president?s first term and the start of his second, Obama, joined by first lady Michelle Obama, began the day participating in a school makeover?project at Burrville Elementary School in Northeast Washington, D.C.,?along with approximately 500 volunteers.

Vice President Joe Biden and his wife, Jill, were also on hand to serve.

?Those who serve our men and women in uniform, our wounded warriors, our veterans and our first responders ? they give so much of themselves ? and for us, it?s our obligation to give back,? Jill Biden said Saturday. ?I hope this is just the first of many of the days that you all volunteer this year and serve your community and our country is something we can do every day all the time for the rest of our lives.?

Obama started the service projects in 2009 and said he hopes his initiative will become a tradition for future presidents.

?America?s never been about what can be done for us; it?s about what can be done by us together,? Obama said on Jan. 4, according to a White House news release.

?Inaugurations are about more than just celebrating, they?re about coming together to make our country a better place,? Obama said in a video message encouraging people to sign up to serve their communities on Saturday.

Thousands of volunteers in all 50 states are slated to participate this year.

  • In Washington, D.C., volunteers will prepare more than 10,000 care packages for soldiers, veterans and first responders.
  • In New York, Mayor Michael Bloomberg and city agencies will be engaging in service projects in communities affected by Superstorm Sandy.
  • Volunteers who signed up in California will give food and winter coats to the homeless.
  • In Chicago, service members will gather at Navy Pier to write letters and put together care packages for service members overseas.
  • Sixty-two AmeriCorps members in Oklahoma will travel to a neighborhood once segregated by Jim Crow laws to repair homes for low-income families.??

Steve Kerrigan, president and CEO of the Presidential Inaugural Committee, says the day of service makes the inauguration ?truly a national celebration.?

The president will officially be sworn in for his second term on Sunday in a private ceremony at the White House. He?ll take the oath of office again on Monday before hundreds of thousands of onlookers on the National Mall, followed by a parade and formal balls in Washington.

President Obama encourages everyone to sign up and serve as part of the National Day of Service on Jan. 19, 2013.

St. Louis, nation mourns Musial's death

By R.B. FALLSTROM

AP Sports Writer

Associated Press Sports

updated 12:23 a.m. ET Jan. 20, 2013

ST. LOUIS (AP) - St. Louis Cardinals reliever Mitchell Boggs was at a party back home in Georgia for his sister's wedding when the gathering suddenly turned somber.

The news had spread that Hall of Famer Stan Musial died on Saturday. He was 92.

"Everybody knew who Stan Musial was," Boggs said in a telephone interview with The Associated Press. "Everyone knew what a great person he was."

A moment of silence was observed before the start of the Rhode Island-Saint Louis men's basketball game across town, and prior to the third period of the St. Louis Blues' NHL opener against the Detroit Red Wings when public address announcer Tom Calhoun described Musial as "St. Louis' favorite son."

Former Cardinals manager Tony La Russa interrupted his annual Animal Rescue Foundation event onstage to pass on the sad news. The Cardinals set up a memorial around the larger of the two Musial statues, a longtime meeting place for fans, outside Busch Stadium.

"Obviously, everybody is heartbroken," current Cardinals manager Mike Matheny said at the Blues game. "There's a lot of people who will quote his stats to you, but what makes it so touching is how it affects people's lives."

Former Cardinals star Albert Pujols weighed in with a tweet: "My prayers are with the Musial family tonight. I will cherish my friendship with Stan for as long as I live. Rest in Peace."

Current Cardinals outfielder Matt Holliday, too: "Sad to hear about Stan the Man, it's an honor to wear the same uniform. Prayers to the Musial family."

Many recalled Musial as the most selfless of sports heroes. Boggs was touched by Musial's enthusiasm when the pitcher cracked the major leagues in 2008.

"He was one of the best players to ever play the game, and he was very happy for me when I made my first team," Boggs said. "He was extremely kind to me. He was one of a kind."

Hall of Fame manager Whitey Herzog said Musial was a player he'd have loved to have written onto his lineup card. He said Musial's influence provided a helpful push in his election to the Hall.

"He was always great to me when I was a nobody," Herzog said. "He will always be Mr. Baseball. You can go around the world and you'll never find a better human being than Stan Musial."

Musial had been in poor health for several years and Herzog remembered a conversation at the funeral of Musial's wife, Lillian, last May in which Musial indicated he was ready for the end of his life.

"I always wanted to live to be 100," Herzog recalled Musial saying, "but I didn't want to live to be 100 like this."

All of Musial's admirers preferred to recall the long-lasting glory days.

"I never got to see him play but I saw what type of person he was and what type of impact he had in this city," Cardinals general manager John Mozeliak said. "That made me realize how lucky we were to have him."

Commissioner Bud Selig said baseball lost "one of its true legends," adding that Musial had been a "Hall of Famer in every sense and a man who led a great American life."

"All of Major League Baseball mourns his passing, and we extend our deepest condolences to his family, friends, admirers and all the fans of the Cardinals," Selig said.

Hall of Fame President Jeff Idelson said: "The mold broke with Stan. There will never be another like him."

"Stan will be remembered in baseball annals as one of the pillars of our game, with his many successes on the diamond, the passion with which he played, and his engaging personality," he said.

Blues Hall of Famer Bernie Federko commented on Musial after broadcasting the hockey team's 6-0 victory over Detroit.

"He never acted like a famous ballplayer, he just acted like a normal guy. He always had time for everyone, and he looked you in the eye," Federko said. "It's a sad day but to go at 92, it's a great life. I lost my dad last year at 92 the same way. If we all signed up for 92 years, we'd be pretty happy about it."
