Ultrabooks, smart phones and gadget-friendly automobiles were the stars of last week's International Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas. But they were hardly the expo's only bright spots. Spread out on a show floor more than 37 football fields in area were plenty of robots, 3-D printers and a variety of new gadgets.

I prowled the floor and came away with photos sampling some of the sleekest, most interesting?not to mention bizarre?technology I could find. Some of the most striking were prototype concept cars that will probably never be used for passenger drives, such as an electric-powered re-imagining of Doc Brown's DeLorean DMC-12 from Back to the Future as well as gorgeous gadgets like Alljack's $68,000 gem-laden wireless speakers.

There are no big upsets left in the NFL playoffs.

The Patriots, Ravens, 49ers, and Giants are all talented teams with obvious limitations. They are all fallible.

It feels like any team left has a great shot at the title, but of course that was the case all along. It just took the Packers and Saints getting knocked out to remind us that the hunt for the Lombardi Trophy was wide open.

We like to convince ourselves the NFL is predictable. We forget that the regular season often has little to do with the postseason. Every year, we are surprised and come back for more.

Consider: Next Sunday?s matchup between the Patriots and Ravens marks the first time since 2004 that the top two seeds made the AFC Championship.

The NFC proved far more surprising. In the year of the record-setting quarterback, Alex Smith?s team beat Drew Brees? Saints in a furious late shootout. Aaron Rodgers will likely win the MVP, but he was outplayed by Eli Manning.

Manning?s Giants symbolize that the playoffs are a different season. It wasn?t so long ago the Giants lost their fourth straight game and were 6-6. Or how about when they lost at home to the Redskins to fall to 7-7?

All year, the Giants had a defense that gave up big plays in bunches. They couldn?t run the ball on offense. But they spackled those problems, displayed their considerable talent, and well, got a little lucky. (9-7 wouldn?t make the playoffs in most divisions.)

Now the Giants have a solid chance to win their second title under Tom Coughlin. I can?t remember a Final Four that was more evenly matched. It wouldn?t surprise me if any of these teams won, but I?m going to lamely try to predict what teams have the best chance left to win it all.

As NFL fans, we never learn.

1. New England Patriots
Things have fallen into place nicely for the Patriots. They only had to beat a mediocre Broncos team to get to the AFC title game.

The recipe to beat New England in the playoffs was simple: have a pass rush and a quarterback. Well, the best quarterbacks have been knocked out.

Baltimore is a difficult test, but the Patriots are a much different team than they were in 2009 when the Ravens won in Foxborough. They have won in a variety of ways. More importantly, Tom Brady has Wes Welker, Rob Gronkowski, and Aaron Hernandez at his disposal.

The Patriots' defense has also quietly improved. They are healthier than they have been all year with safety Patrick Chung and linebacker Brandon Spikes both making a huge difference.

New England gets the top spot on my list because they have the last transcendent quarterback left in the field. In a one-game situation, I?ll still take Tom Brady at quarterback and Bill Belichick drawing up a gameplan.

Brady and Belichick will only get so many chances to win one more title. They know what a great opportunity they have in front of them.

2. San Francisco 49ers
If the 49ers can survive that game against New Orleans, they can survive anything. The 49ers have the best group of defensive players remaining. Justin Smith, Aldon Smith, Patrick Willis, and Navorro Bowman are all among the best at their positions.

Jim Harbaugh is on a serious playcalling roll and the 49ers showed against New Orleans they can win any kind of game. They love the slugfest and Alex Smith showed they can come from behind too.

3. New York Giants
Winning in Green Bay and San Francisco in back-to-back weeks is a tall order. The Giants can match up with any team?s talent, but scoring on the 49ers will be difficult. New York?s sagging running game figures to be stuffed.

The Falcons and Packers haven?t had the horses to show the holes in New York?s pass protection, but the 49ers can get to any quarterback. Just ask Drew Brees.

The Giants are peaking at the right time and they will get a lot of comparisons to the ?07 title team. They remind me more of the ?08 Eagles. That Philadelphia team was talented, got hot late in the year, and then lost in the NFC Championship game in Arizona just when everyone expected them to win.

4. Baltimore Ravens
The gap between the Ravens and Patriots is not great, but Baltimore finished fourth in my little exercise for a few reasons.

They don?t have the best remaining defense left. That belongs to the 49ers. San Francisco is more physical, too.

Houston dominated the line of scrimmage against Baltimore. The Texans were the better running team, and they had the better pass rush.

Baltimore had the better quarterback against Houston, but that won?t be true against the Patriots. And it won?t be true if the Ravens faced the Giants; Joe Flacco simply hasn?t played that well down the stretch this season.

Could the Ravens win it all? Of course. But they are playing on the road Sunday and don?t seem to be playing their best football.

As we learned Sunday, that can all change in one performance.

Overweight Teen Girls May Have Higher Acne Risk (HealthDay)

MONDAY, Jan. 16 (HealthDay News) -- Teenage girls who are overweight or obese are significantly more likely to develop acne than their normal-weight peers, a new Norwegian survey suggests.

Researchers looked at whether weight, and more specifically body mass index (BMI, a ratio of weight to height), had any bearing on the onset of the common skin condition among teens.

Teens' responses to questionnaires focusing on acne history and weight suggested an association among girls but not boys.

The reasons behind the link aren't clear, one expert said.

Overweight girls "may perceive their acne as being worse than it actually is, possibly due to self-image issues," said Dr. Robert Kirsner, a professor and vice chairman in the department of dermatology and cutaneous surgery at the University of Miami's Miller School of Medicine.

On the other hand, biology could play a role, said Kirsner, who was not involved with the study but is familiar with its findings.

"It is possible, but not yet known, that in girls, but not boys, excessive androgens caused by obesity has a greater additive effect on acne," he said. "It may be also possible that the psychological effect of being overweight in girls is greater than boys and thus leads to a more pronounced increase in stress hormones in girls, with acne as a consequence."

The Norwegian team led by author Dr. Jon Anders Halvorsen, of the department of dermatology at Oslo University Hospital and the faculty at the University of Oslo, reports its findings Jan. 16 in the Archives of Dermatology.

The authors point out that between 10 percent and 20 percent of teens struggle with moderate to severe acne, with many developing serious psychological issues revolving around poor self-esteem and difficulty socializing. At the same time, more and more children are falling prey to the so-called obesity epidemic.

To explore whether a connection could exist between the two, the investigating team conducted a survey involving roughly 3,600 Norwegians ages 18 and 19.

None of the participants was actively seeking out medical care at the study's launch. All provided their weight and height, and all reported on whether or not they had had pimples, and to what degree, the week before the study.

All responded to questions about drinking or smoking, history of mental distress and dietary habits -- especially concerning sugar, sweets, chocolate, raw vegetables, fatty fish and potato chips.

Overweight was defined as having a BMI of 25 and up, while obesity referred to a BMI of 30 and up. Just under 10 percent of the girls and just over 15 percent of the boys were deemed overweight; fewer than 40 of either gender were classified as obese.

Overall, roughly 13 percent of all the girls were found to have acne. When looking solely at girls who were overweight or obese, however, this figure rose to almost 19 percent.

The story was different among boys, with between 13 percent and 14 percent having acne regardless of their weight.

After accounting for an array of other possible factors that might affect acne risk, Halvorsen's team concluded that excess weight is associated with acne risk among teenage girls, but not boys.

It should be noted, though, that the study revealed an association between excess weight and acne, but did not prove cause-and-effect.

Dr. Joel Gelfand, medical director of the department of dermatology clinical studies unit at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia, described the effort as "very important," given the paucity of research in the field.

"There's not a lot of work out there understanding what the risk factors are for developing acne," he said. "And we're talking about a disease that affects virtually everyone at some point, and can have a devastating impact on a person's quality of life. So any work to better understand why people develop it and ways of preventing it -- which we don't currently have -- is of substantial importance."

French president: Credit downgrade changes nothing (AP)

MADRID ? French President Nicolas Sarkozy on Monday shrugged off his country's loss of its prized AAA debt rating, saying the downgrade by rating agency Standard & Poor's would change nothing.

The comments, his first since S&P lowered its score on France and eight European other countries on Friday, followed a successful auction by France of euro8.6 billion ($10.9 billion) in short-term debt Monday. The yields, the interest rates charged by investors on the debt, fell ? a sign investors still see the country as a good bet.

France won a further small reprieve Monday, when the Moody's agency confirmed that it would keep its top rating. However, the S&P decision could seriously impair Sarkozy's bid for re-election this spring.

Sarkozy told reporters he was unconcerned with the opinions of ratings agencies.

"We have to react to this (the downgrade) with calm, by taking a step back," he said at a news conference with the new Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy. "At the core, my conviction is that it changes nothing."

Sarkozy won support from Rajoy for a new European tax on financial transactions being pushed by France and Germany. Rajoy's center-right government took power last month, and had not previously stated its position on the tax.

The French president said the ratings agencies' decisions would not affect his policies, though he did acknowledge that France has work to do, saying that its deficits and spending were too high and that its growth was too slow.

He also noted that two of the three major agencies still rate France at triple-A, the highest rating. Fitch confirmed the rating last week. The S&P move was especially brutal for France, one of the world's biggest economies and a financier of bailouts for smaller, poorer eurozone countries.

There are more government auctions in Europe this week, including longer-term offerings from France on Thursday, so the European debt crisis will never be too far from investors' minds.

The news conference began combatively when Sarkozy refused to answer a question about whether France's downgrade would affect its ability to lead Europe out of the crisis and if it had any connection with the meeting between the French, Italian and German leaders scheduled for next week being postponed.

Sarkozy and German Chancellor Angela Merkel have taken the lead in proposing solutions to the crisis and major decisions are often hashed out at their meetings ahead of European summits.

"You don't have the latest information," Sarkozy blithely told the reporter, apparently referring to Moody's decision on Monday. The reporter rephrased the question two more times, but Sarkozy again refused to answer.

Later on, in response to other questions, he confirmed that the three-way summit would take place in February and spoke about the S&P downgrade.

Earlier, Sarkozy met with Spanish King Juan Carlos, who said he's confident France and Spain would help Europe find a way out of the crisis.

The king said the two nations were "struggling together for the advance of a unified and prosperous Europe in solidarity that confronts the crisis with strength."

Rajoy's Socialist predecessor also supported the financial tax championed by Sarkozy, but was ousted from office by Spaniards angry about the country's hurting economy and high unemployment.

The European Commission has estimated that the tax could raise as much as euro57 billion ($72.2 billion) a year, funds that could be used to help reduce the substantial budget deficits crippling European economies.

For the tax to be successful, however, it needs to be adopted by as many countries as possible. Sarkozy has said it might be enough to enact it among the 17-nation euro countries. Italian Prime Minister Mario Monti prefers applying it across the full 27-nation European Union, but that would be more difficult because of U.K. opposition.

Part of the reason for the tax would be to raise funds at a time when governments are struggling with high debts.

Moody's cited France's economic strength as a reason for affirming its top rating but said bleak growth prospects in France and the region present "risks to the French government's fiscal consolidation plans."

"France, like other eurozone sovereigns, may face a number of challenges in the coming months. The need to provide additional support to other European sovereigns or to its own banking system cannot be excluded," Moody's warned.

Moody's said Monday it "will update the market during the first quarter of 2012 as part of the initiative to revisit the overall architecture of our sovereign ratings in the EU."

Sarkozy's challengers for the presidency have seized on the S&P downgrade as evidence that his policies are wrong-headed and ineffective.

It will be a bruising election battle for Sarkozy, a dynamic leader who has a strong international profile but is widely disliked at home. Leftists say he has coddled the rich, while many of those who supported him in his 2007 campaign say he hasn't fulfilled his promises.
