The new iPad went on sale on Friday.

As usual, Apple zealots waited in lines at Apple Stores for days to get one, even though Apple now distributes gadgets through lots of other retailers (some of which had no lines at all for the iPad).

And, as usual, Apple carefully and wisely sent free iPads in advance of Friday to a handful of friendly gadget reviewers, all of whom were presumably eager to preserve their royalty status with Apple.

(In a strange inversion of journalistic principles, this sort of bribe is not just tolerated in the gadget-review industry--it bestows status points on the bribe-recipient. So we certainly don't blame Apple for spreading around bribes.)

But all this means that the world has now been treated to a raft of iPad reviews from a contingent of folks who have a strong incentive to view the iPad in a favorable light.

(If you had waited in line for 7 hours for an object you could walk into a store and buy today in 7 minutes, wouldn't you want to persuade yourself that your time hadn't been wasted?)

But now, finally, we'll get more objective views of the new iPad.

For example, on Friday, our gadget guru, Steve Kovach, held two iPads in front of me--the iPad 2 and the new iPad--to show off the new "retina screen" that Apple-approved iPad reviewers are hyperventilating about.

I glanced at the two iPads for a second or two, and, frankly, I couldn't tell the difference. They both looked great. Maybe there is, in fact, a mind-blowing difference that will eventually cause me, too, to hyperventilate, but I couldn't see it a glance. (Of course, I'm still happy with my iPhone 3GS).

The "dictation" feature on the new iPad certainly looks cool, but the downfall of speech-recognition software like this is usually long, complex paragraphs, not simple sentences. So the jury's still out on that.

In a side-by-side comparison of videos shot with the iPad 2 and new iPad, I couldn't tell the difference between the two, at least on a small screen.

So, at least at first glance, some of the most ballyhooed features of the new iPad seemed pretty ho-hum in reality.

Now, if I were in the market for an iPad, I'd certainly spend the extra $100 to get these features. But I'm not in the market for a new iPad, because we already have one (an iPad 1, which still does everything we ask it to do very well).

So, anyway, what do normal folks think of the new iPad?

Jockey Corey Nakatani, One of the Best Riders in North America

Corey Nakatani has long been a fixture among the very best jockeys riding in the United States today. He has won many of the biggest races that are run in the United States, and has even been chosen by many European trainers to ride their top fillies, mares and colts when the biggest event of the year, the Breeders' Cup World Championships, comes along every year at the end of October or early in November.
Nakatani is not a jockey that favors one type of surface over another. Indeed, a look at his surefire Hall-of-Fame record shows conclusively that he has run many prestigious, Grade I events featuring lucrative purses sometimes in the millions of dollars, and he has won those races on natural dirt in the slop or on a fast track, on dry grass or wet grass, and on every type of synthetic, whether it be Polytrack or ProRide.
At the the age of 28 years old, Nakatani graduated in Castaic, California from jockey training school. In 1988, he won his very first race aboard a horse by the name of Blue King. One notable thing about Corey's first win was the fact that it was, after a photo finish, determined to be a dead heat, making Nakatani the only jockey riding in the United States today who won his first race in an actual dead heat. He first gained national prominence in 1991 when, on the Friday before Kentucky Derby day at Churchill Downs in Louisville, Kentucky, he won the Kentucky Oaks in impressive fashion aboard a fine filly named Lite Light. He then won the Oaks again in 1996 atop Pike Place Dancer. Nakatani's reputation as a major stakes jockey was secure at that point, but it was in the 1996 Breeders' Cup that he really made himself a household name in the racing world.
He won two of the most prestigious Breeders' Cup races in the Breeders' Cup Distaff (now known as the Ladies' Classic) atop Jewel Princess and then won the Breeders' Cup Sprint on a colt named Lit de Justice. Since 1996, Nakatani has totally dominated the Breeders' Cup, and although he has yet to win the Breeders' Cup Classic, he has won a grand total of 4 times in the Breeders' Cup Sprint alone, and 7 total Breeders' Cup races.
2006 was a banner year for Nakatani, as on Memorial Day of that year he won his 3000th race at Hollywood Park. The one thing that Nakatani is still searching for is a Triple Crown victory, especially a Kentucky Derby victory. With the success that he has already had in racing, you can bet that Corey Nakatani will get plenty of chances at the Triple Crown races, whether it be the Kentucky Derby, the Preakness Stakes, or the Belmont Stakes.

Oil near $106 as US denies plan to release crude

Oil prices rose slightly to near $106 a barrel Friday after the U.S. denied reports it and the U.K. plan to release some their strategic crude reserves.

By early afternoon in Europe, benchmark oil for April delivery was up 58 cents to $105.69 in electronic trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange. The contract fell 32 cents to settle at $105.11 per barrel in New York on Thursday.

In London, Brent crude for May delivery was up 82 cents at $123.42 per barrel on the ICE Futures exchange.

Oil briefly dropped near $104 per barrel Thursday after reports said the U.S. and Britain had agreed to release spare supplies of oil in an effort to drive fuel prices lower. However, White House press secretary Jay Carney said there was no plan to provide more crude to markets.

Some analysts downplayed how much a possible release of supplies would lower prices.

"The price impact should a release actually develop would be largely psychological," energy analyst Ritterbusch and Associates said in a report. "A shortage of crude or products does not currently exist within the U.S. and European product markets appear adequately supplied."

Oil prices have risen from $75 in October amid investor optimism an improving U.S. economy will boost crude demand. However, the Energy Department's Energy Information Administration said Wednesday that gasoline demand was down 7.2 percent from a year ago.

"Despite an array of pleasing economic data in recent weeks, the latest surge in the price of oil can hardly be justified from a fundamental standpoint," said Joerg Zeuner, chief economist at VP Bank. "The demand for crude remains relatively weak."

Speculation about the effects on oil supplies of the tensions between Western powers and Iran over Teheran' nuclear program continued to keep a floor under prices.

In other energy trading, heating oil was up 1.45 cents at $3.2370 per gallon and gasoline futures gained 0.65 cent at $3.2950 per gallon. Natural gas slid 1 cent to $2.268 per 1,000 cubic feet.
